Radiator Question

I have a 70 Charger R/T SE with the A35 towing package.  My build
sheet calls for the 2998956 radiator. This radiator is also spec'ed for
Hemi 4sp & Hemi auto?!  So, if I read this right, there are 2 different
radiators with the same #?

Go figure. The radiator in my car is 2998958. This is listed as being for
a 833 4speed car - though it does have an AT cooler in it. Perhaps my
build sheet doesn't contain the only typos my car has.

Not sure what to do here. HELP with recommendations & explanations!

There aren't two different radiators with the same number, the same radiator was used in a variety of car/engine combos that called for maximum cooling. Not unusual.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Brock, possibly the day your car was built they ran out of 956 radiators and substituted a 958 in its place.Dimensionally the same radiator with the same neck configuration just maybe a little less cooling capacity. John.

Or even just a plain and simple mix up on the line.  Most likely though, it's exactly what Mr. Kunkel has stated.

Check the date code on the radiator and see how it matches with your car.

Supposedly my car was built during a strike.  Yes, my 958 radiator is ballpark for my car.  It could be
original.  Don't know.  The thing that no one has taken into account is that auto trans radiators have
a cooler in the lower tank.  So, what's up with the 956 radiator for both Hemi auto & Hemi 4sp?

Yeah, I have a manual trans radiator complete with an auto trans cooler in my car & its datecode
correct.

Seems weird to me.

Not necessarily, it would have been more of a concern if they had used a manual trans rad in an automatic car.  ;)

Well, just going by the numbers:  thats exactly what happened.  A manual trans radiator number on the top tank.
The other number on it is 20x46 (yeah the middle digit is a double stamped 4 & 6)  Is this the date code?  What
does it translate to or mean?

Thanks for helping!

Now I get you.  I think it sounds more like one of those assembly screw ups is all.  :shruggy:

20x46 is the vendor code.

Thanks guys.  I'm gonna call my radiator good to go - although that ain't matching the
typo'd build sheet
My reason for caring is simple.  Mine is 1 of 94 & when it gets down to it I feel the need
to preserve it.  Seems the only way to really get a performance package with A/C in 70
was to get the A35 towing package.  Not sure what good it is to preserve/restore my car
afterall.  My build sheet is typod & even my radiator has a doublestamped digit in it.  At
least the engine & tranny match up without question.

I still would like to know how it is that the 956 radiator is spec'ed for both auto & 4sp
Hemis?!

There are lots of applications where the same radiator is installed in either a manual or automatic transmission vehicle.  For instance, my 4-speed 440 Daytona is coded for the 2949055 radiator, and has a bottom tank with tranny cooler fittings.  Are they used?  Of course not - they're just hanging out there with nothing to do.

2949055 radiators were installed as standard equipment in the following 1969 applications (all are B-Bodies):

383 2bbl with Automatic and Air Conditioning (except Police Package, and subject to axle ratio limitations)
383 4bbl with Automatic and Air Conditioning (except Police Package, and subject to axle ratio limitations)
440 4bbl with Automatic and Air Conditioning (except Police Package, and subject to axle ratio limitations)
440 4bbl with Manual Transmission (and 3.54 rear axle ratio)

Only one of the above applications is for a manual transmission, but they all got the same radiator with transmission coolers in the bottom tank.

My 4-speed R/T has an 054 radiator with cooler fittings in its bottom tank as well, and in '69 the 054 radiator was used on both 4-speed and automatic Hemicars similar to what 1970 lists with the 956's.  It's not a big deal as far as I know.  I've seen and heard of cars with different radiators than what was spec'd, but it's not the norm - and the more prominent case of this I can remember they went UP on the radiator application rather than down.  It could still happen though...

Now that's getting to the bottom of things Hemigeno!  Thank you very much!! I was offered
a 956 radiator by a fellow member with 15 posts in 3 years of membership.  I have decided
to stay with my original 4 speed trans radiator.  Perhaps the 958 on it is a typo?  The middle
digit in it's vendor code is definately a 4 & 6 struck 1 on top of the other.  I really do want
to make this car like a time capsule - it's too original & close to stock not to!
