Engine Oil Help

Hi

Just spoke to a mechanic the family has known for years. TOld him I have a 383ci motor and that I was recomended to use 20 W 40 or 25 W 50.

Now I know there is valvoline, royal purple etc etc.


This mechanic said he would not use anything other than Penrite HPR 40/70.

Said hes stuck it in every car over the last 30 years, nobody has ever complained, engines that blew smoke stopped, etc etc etc. He said because its such a heavy oil it will find any spot thats not getting enough lubrication. He stays away from everything else. The higher performance motor you go the more reason to use Penrite 40/70 is basically what has been said. For my 383ci he swears by the 40/70 HPR.

Your thoughts?

I did a little searching....I had not heard of this oil until your post. Probably fine to use as you have an enthusiatic  from a family mechanic.

Is this the first oil change since you received your '68? What had the previous owner run? Still enjoying slamming through the gears?

That is Penrite HPR50, to heavy for your engine unless it is a real oil burner, go HPR30 that is 20-50.
I don't think Penrite is readily available in the states.

Gears are fun to go through until I am slowing down, then you cant get in 2nd or 1st. These bugs will be fixed this/next week. Might need new clutch linkage and syncros.

Dont know what the previous owner ran. Will be all flushed out and drained then new oil put in.

I asked if it is too heavy of an oil for the 383 and he said hes stuck it in turbo cars where synthetic is usually what you would put. He uses it on all his cars and at the next service the oil comes out nice and golden (like new). He said due to the fact the engine is a cast Iron block, and big in cubic inches it gets very hot in there, so he would "definately" use it.

If it is a detergent oil, and it comes out like new, I wonder if its doing its job inside the engine.
