I want to pull the 440 engine out of my 68 Charger. No experience doing this, and not much working on cars in general. I want to pull it out and get it on an engine stand. Does anyone have a checklist of things that need to be done/unhooked/disconnected in order to lift the engine out? I did a quick search and didnt see one. That would be very helpful. Without, I can imagine it would take me a LONG time to get this done. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks
Jim

Here's a quick checklist, since you didn't say i'll assume its an automatic...always disconnect the battery before starting
1.drain coolant and oil
2.remove flex plate cover
3.remove torque converter to flexplate bolts
4.disconnect exhaust
5. disconnect wiring (and for God's sake label it, even if you think you'll remember, just label the stuff. Most mistakes are made here)
6.disconnect fuel line, and power steering pump (set this aside and wire it up)
7. remove trans to engine bolts
8. remove motor mount bolts
9. Remove radiator (just so you don't damage it)
10. Remove hood, it will make your life alot easier
11.disconnect kickdown linkage and throttle cable
12.put a floor jack underneath the transmission with a 2x4 between the pan and the trans, then wiggle the engine to release it from the trans, then SLOWLY jack up in case you missed anything so you don't cause any damage, then go until it clears the rad support and pull it out.

if its your first time i'd recommend having someone there to help you out, you will appreciate it. and short of number 12, the rest are interchangeable for the most part, as long as they all get done. other than that take your time to make sure you get everything out just fine. I think thats pretty much it, its just a basic guideline though, if your car has a/c its more involved for example, but this will at least get you a good start.

In addition to the list allready provided, I'd suggest that you have a good floor jack to get the car in the air high enough to work under it, and of course four good heavy duty jack stands to support the car with, and an engine lift to lift the engine out. I suppose everyone has their own way of doing this job but I personally remove the driveshaft, and the transmission, then the engine. (You'll want to support the back of the engine with an additional jack stand before removing the transmission if you go this route). It just seems easier to me this way.
There are little things that you can fabricate or buy that will make the job easier like a lift plate that bolts to your intake manifold for the engine lift to hook into. I made my own but you can buy them. Another thing I made was a plate that would bolt to my floor jack so I could use the floor jack to lower the automatic transmission. Four speed tranny I just lift out manually.
A gas torch can really come in handy, also an air compressor an a few pneumatic tools, etc.
Just think your way through everything you do first, before you do it, and think safety.

The lists above are pretty good, just take your time and think about it, if you have the time, ask a question on the board and take a break. Pulling  abig block out of a mopar is a pretty simplistic task, after doing it in some modern cars I can tell you its a LOT easier. I yanked the 383 out of my '72 last weekend, took me about 5 hours to do by myself start to finish, and I was being pretty lazy about it.
