SKS Gun Question-Assult Rifle Question

OK,
I am going to check out a used SKS today. Seems to be a deal, the guy wants $300 but I know he would take $200 cash in hand.
Question is, if it is the pre ban SKS, I should be safe as far as a quality gun? :scratchchin:
Also, if it is the mass prodiced after ban SKS, is the Chinese version OK?
I am trying to research  the SKS history, I would like an assault rifle before any bans happen on assault rifles in the future.
Basically, is the SKS a good Assault rifle as far as Assault rifles go?

1. The SKS is not considered an Assault Rifle. Technically an Assault Rifle has selective fire. The SKS is catagorized as a Semi-Auto Carbine I think.

2. A friend has a Chinese model (even still has the bayonet attached) along with 4000 rounds of chinese ammunition and he's yet to have a single problem with the firearm or the ammunition in fact. I don't know about others but this one kicks like a friggin mule!

First, stop calling them "assault rifles!" Assault is a behavior, not a device. They are semi-automatic rifles, nothing more. And Drache is correct, the SKS is not classified as an "assault rifle" due to the lack of selective fire.

Now to answer your questions. Pre-ban/post-ban doesn't have as much to do with quality so much as the origin of the rifle. Pre-ban Chinese SKS/AK's are by far the worst quality and the post-ban rifles are only marginally better. Russian/Soviet made guns are decent. From my experience and learning Yugoslavian made rifles are of the best quality. (Remember, we are talking about a gun that was designed to be produced in mass quantities and extremely cheaply so none of them are going to compare to anything American made.) They all shoot. The problems you will tend to run into with lower quality rifles are jamming and magazine fitment. But you can have these problems with any gun.

About that price, $200 is actually on the high side IMHO for a used SKS (that is dependent on how much the gun has been fired). For about the same amount of money you can probably get a new or very lightly used SKS or AK at a gun show.

To answer your last question, the SKS is ok but most people that I know prefer the AK to the SKS. You can get a good Yugoslavian or Bulgarian AK for about the same amount of money if you shop around. Either way you will still have a gun that is going to shoot. It all comes down to what you really want. If you're willing to take the time to shop around, wait. If you think this is the gun you want get it...

I figured those guns would bring more then 200$-300$.  I think we got a gun show coming up maybe i should go check it out!

Well,
I missed out on the SKS. The guy sold it for $150 with ammo. :RantExplode: :brickwall:

I went to the local gun shop and they can't keep "Assault Rifles" in stock.
They have 1 High Point 9mm Rifle, the sales guy said it is a Assault Rifle?
I know that High Point hand guns are junk but he swears that local police have bought the 9mm rifles from them and that they have had no complaints. They want $200 for the 9mm.

Any input would be appreciated.

I think $200 is a good price. Chinese quality, the odds are 95% it will not blow up when you're firing it...that's an "A" in anyones book!

I bought a Yugo SKS for $125 at a gun show last year. It was mint and still in it's original box. I guess the prices have went up recently.

mikepmcs

I have a russian sks.  not worth a thing, I couldn't believe it either when I did the research.  The guys/gals getting good money for these things is purely because when someone hear's the words sks/assault rifle/ak what have you, eyes get wide and the money starts flying and the seller laughs all the way to the bank.  I also have a hi point 9mm and yes they are junk but hey, only needs to shoot about point blank to 20 feet, if you get my drift, so i'm good with it, quality wise.

I got the sks and a 9mm from my buddy with plenty of ammo, box, strip clips, the whole deal for $200.

Keep searching, you'll find your deal :2thumbs:

I can purchase a sks at my local gun shop for 250 new with bayonet.  I say scratch the sks and save a little more and get an AK/47.  If you want to spend up to 500 you can get really good quality AKM/47's.  These are modified AK's.  The quality of metal is far better and the quality exceeds any of the older models.   I have had the SAR AKM/47, very short but it could shoot hundreds of bullets without getting the barrel to glow.   I was impressed with the new AKM technology, in comparison to the old any way.  AMERICAN guns are far superior but are much more expensive.  That's my two cents anyway.

the high point 9mm is a carbine, its not classified as an assualt rifle either.  high points are ok but you limited as to using their mags and then you can only use pistol mags. If i were you, get an AK, you'll spend a little around 400 or so for a decent plinker up to 10k for a full auto.  I got my pre-ban ak with 3 30 rd mags, a 5 rd mag, bayonet and sling plus ammo and cleaning kit for just under 400 last year from the local shop

I went to another shop and they had a nice looking Assault rifle, I believe it was a SQ10? :shruggy:
They had a used AK for $700.
I have a 9mm pistol so I guess it would be pointless to get that  9mm High Point and just save a week or 2 more for the Assault that I would really want. :shruggy:
I just hope that I can still get one in a few weeks. :scratchchin:
They have been selling fast here in NE,Ohio. Used & new, all different types of firearms.
Thanks of all the input. I am a dummy with the assault rifles and am trying to research it more to find a good model and brand. I made a bad, bad mistake with my 9mm pistol and bought a heap of dung. :RantExplode:

dude, youll be able to get one no problem. the earliest obama or the dems could do anything would be january 21st, 2009 and i highly doubt that theyll move that quickly.  Hes got more important things to focus on, gun stuff will be towards the bottom of his list. im assuming that that ak was yugoslavian or chinese based on the price of it. check out shotgunnews.com, they have several listed for under 500.

Possibly an AR-10? :shruggy: Look anything like this?

If it did you're looking at between $1500-4000. Even a lower end AR-15 will cost you upwards of $800-1000...

The SKS is not an assault Rifle...   it is a semi-auto rifle just like an M1 Garand or Carbine...     an assault rifle is defined as...

Generic Characteristics Defining Assault Weapons:
12276.1 (a) Notwithstanding Penal Code section 12276, "assault weapon" shall also mean the following:
Rifles
(1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of
the following:
(A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
(B) A thumbhole stock.
(C) A folding or telescoping stock.
(D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
(E) A flash suppressor.
(F) A forward pistol grip.
(2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10
rounds.
(3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length of less than 30 inches.
Note: Bayonets and bayonet lugs are not assault weapon characteristics under California law.

The SKS does not have a detachable magazine...   therefore it is not an assault rifle...

If im not mistaken the SQ10 is a updated design simliar to the 5.56 caliber AR15 with some distinct differences.  It looks nothing like the AR15 but still accepst standard AR15 mags.  Similar to the british bullypup 5.56 rifle. Its made in belgium by a company FFNS, they make the M249 and M240B machine guns for the US miltary.

My brother has an SKS, and he used to have an AK as well. The SKS was a Yugo model, it was ok. Never had any mechanical issues with it but I was never very impressed with it's performance in the accuracy dept. The AK was much more fun, and more accurate. However, if you're willing to spend the money a nice M1A is fantastic.

Went to a gun show today. Seen no AK-47's or SKS units.  Cheapest guns I saw was a few shotguns in the 300$ range and one very small 22 rifle for 250$.  A few cheesy pistols for 250$.  Everything else was 400$ and up. Colt AR-15's were 1500$ and up. PIstols were all 500$ and up for the name brands.

Yeah man,
I am going to the shop Monday to look at that assault rifle again.
It has to be a AR 10.
I had better get that Pistol Grip Mossberg shot gun that I want soon if they are going for at least $300 at gun shows. :shruggy:

Yeah, I went to the local hardware store yesterday, which is also the local gun/fishing gear, etc... store.   They had 3 AK's there in the high 6 range.
I noticed the guns looked like they were just a tad more than they should be.  Even a .22 looked too expensive to me but not overly ridiculous.  Bought some 9mm rounds though for $13/50. Not bad, so the ammo price jack hasn't hit maine just yet.  I'm going to wally world here in a couple hours to see what is on the shelf for ammo there.  Need some 39mm and some more 9mm, and a charge of shotgun since they are cheap.  Stockin' up just in case prices go crazy in the near future.
Funny thing though, in the local trader mag(called uncle henry's) quite a few SKS that were in the $300 range which surprised me, so people are noticing and trying to get top dollar for their junk all of a sudden.

Next gun show here is in early January.  One in NH next week though :scratchchin:

Yeah,
I have been stocking up at Wal Mart on 9mm rounds $8/50 Blazer Blast. They are not to bad. Each time I go to Wal Mart with the wife, etc... I pick up a box or 2.  :icon_smile_tongue:

picked up a box of  rem 39mm/20 for $14 and a box of winch 9mm/100 for $19, not too bad but it was the only box of the 39mm. So, yes I was a little surprised, to see it so empty in the ammo department.  I still have a box of the blazer stuff on my shelf.
I need to go to DICK's Sporting Goods(chain), my buddy says that is the best place still to get ammo(as in selection I imagine)

The term is "mags" no "clips", clips are what you'd put in a Garand.  :nana:

as for the WASR-10 is the romanian version of an AK47 chambered in 7.62....

The WASR-10 is a copy of a Kalishnikov but with lower build expitations! They have been known to have loose mag wells and front sights that aren't exactly centered.

A good "assault" looking rifle in 9mm is a Beretta CX4 Storm although they can be a little pricey. They are semi auto only but are surprisingly accurate and the mags from a Beretta 92F (in 9mm) will work with the CX4.

the AK is a good system as well  however rather limited in the options...     good gun for just plinking but I feel the .223 is a better round than the 7.62...

i not going tell you how to do. it but if i did you take the stock from the gun then unclip the magazine from the reciever should swing off put gun back together now you should be able to put a detachable clip in like a ak

Drache

Also remember that there are many arguments online saying that the 5.56 and the .223 are DIFFERENT! Military personnel say they are the same and interchangeable while it seems civvies say they are different.

General consensus is that if the gun reads 5.56 you can also use .223 Remingtons, but if the gun reads .223, you should only use .223.
