There are still a few barn find deals out there.  I like the 500 that was turned up a few weeks ago better but a factory SD Pontiac with race history is pretty cool I have to admit.

You didn't read the thread did you? ;)

It's one of 8 factory lightweight race cars. It originally had an aluminum front (which still exists but no one knew where the car went).

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

He was going to sell it for scrap until the prices dropped below $100 per ton. Apparently, the ultra-rare exhaust parts (including special aluminum headers) were in the trunk and he'd never opened it.

That's a lot of cash for that with no motor...  I dunno.  :-\
It's not like a swiss cheese 421 Catalina.

A local guy has one of those... found it in a barn about 2 years ago and got it from the original owner.    215 aluminum buick v8.   IRS tansaxle deal.  Pretty cool little car.
I found a halfazz pic of it online.  I can't find any in my pic folder right now.

The IRS transaxle part is cool...   anybody remember My Cousin Vinny?

It seems like a lot to me too given the circumstnaces but then again, a lot of the Pontiac guys likely think Hemi Cudas are overpriced. (I do too but that's beside the point)

If the guy is telling the truth about Jay Leno bidding on it, I would like to see him get it.  He is one of the few that could put the car back together, right.  We all have seen his collection, and know that he has a competent staff on hand.  Plus all the money that is going to be needed to actually find the parts needed is going to be astronomical.  He is one of the few that will have the asking price and then some to put it back together.  He has mechanics on staff that could spend there whole day working on repairing and restoring this to its former glory.  I really think that needs to be done. When you buy this car you don't just get a piece of metal with some rubber, but you get HISTORY.  Things like this need to be preserved.  IMO... :Twocents:

I gotta agree, SOMEBODY witht he cash should restore the car back to the way it raced.

bull

I would gladly sell every 63 Tempest I could get my hands on for half that. :icon_smile_tongue: Was this dragster one of those rear trans cars like the production examples? My brother had a 63 Tempest with the 326 in the front and the two speed trans in the back and that thing whined louder than a hungry two-year-old.
