I've always done it the way you are doing it.

One tire on the ground, one not, turn the tire two revolutions while counting the turns of the driveline.
The number of times the driveline turns is your gear ratio. I've never had a problem with this method.
Still looking for 15x7 Appliance slotted mags.....
