This has probably been done by someone before but I decided to step away from the stock bolt-on extenders.
Isnt finished yet but you get the idea.
*Pictures dont do it justice (in my humble opinion).  :P*

It eliminates two parts and follows the flare of the taillight panel.

Interesting.  It'll be nice to see it when you are finished.

I really like those alot. I've been thinking of ways to eliminate some of the seams on my 68 and this seam bugs me most. Do you have any finished or updated photos?

Finn

Thanks man! I keep forgetting to take a good camera with me so all I have are cell phone pics right now:

What other seams were you thinking of?

A couple people including myself have filled in the sides between the sail and the dutch panelsl:

Ive also seen the fender/valence seam filled in but I'm undecided on that what at the moment.

I have done these...    dont forget the lower rear valence corners need to be filled too...     while you're at it shave the drip rails    :D

I like the sail panel seam treatment you've done. I didn't even think of that one. The quarters to valence corners look fantastic smoothed over IMO. I've been thinking about drip rail shaving, I'm just not sure how involved it gets...Have any of you fellas done it? Is it just a matter of cutting and butt welding the seam between the roof skin and adjoining sheetmetal? I imagine if that were the case you'd weld like replacing corners, joining tack welds spaced apart? I'm definetly at that point in my restoration where it's the perfect time for that kind of thing......

Rolling_Thunder

I like the filled seam here - especially on a white car...   makes it look alot cleaner...

Shaved Driprails...      in a word...   WORK. It would involve cutting as close to the body panels as possible and then welding the seam...    GO SLOW - you will easily warp the metal on the roof and you will not be happy...     then use lead or a fiberglass re-enforced filler ---- to use as little filler as possible means alot of welding and grinding into shape...

Rolling Thunder-Just to verify this eliminates the chrome on the top half only or are you planning on leaving the bottom parts off as well so there is no chrome around the window save the vent glass?

Morgan8e-I noticed that Thunder's extenders follow the stock shape whereas mine flare out. Just thought Id point that out so you don't reference one photo then wonder why it didn't turn out like another photo lol.

while i appreciate your mod Finn, i wonder why you didn't raise the lip on the trunk to keep the spoiler height uniform...  :popcrn:

Finn

If I remember my train of thought at the time, I decided to try and match the height of the flares with the the peak in the trunk so that if a flat object was laid across it there would be three places touching. Looking at it again though, your idea of increasing the flip in the lip may have been a better way to go, I'll definitely be taking another look at it when its finished.

I have to say, both approaches to this mod look good to me...I'm having a hard time figuring out which one to do...javascript:void(0);

Correct - this rids the drip rail molding and the belt moldings.   The only bright-work that remains is the trim that runs along the top of the glass opening and the vent wings,

How did you fill the seams on the rear extentions? Did you fabricate new extentions, and welded them to the quarters, or did you use the original ones? Did you fill with bondo or led?
I have been thinking about the exact same thing, plus driprails, all other seams etc.
Looks great with that color :2thumbs:
Since we only live once, and all this is not just a dressed rehearsal, but the real thing............ Well, enjoy it!!!!

Curious about this as well.  ;)

Finn

I fabricated new ones and welded them on but I'm not sure what Thunder did. I think he has pics of the process in his restoration blog?? I could be wrong though lol.

I used the old ones to maintain the stock shape as my fab skills were not up to par at the time...      I leaded them in and then used fiberglass re-enforced body filler...    sanded and then glaze putty over...      I do have a couple pics in my thread in the charger section

Very interesting.  I couldn't remeber what the extensions were made of, whether they could be welded on or not.

I think you are right about the pot metal.  I haven't looked at mine for so long, not even sure where they are.   :icon_smile_cool:

They are pot metal, stay away with the welder. :Twocents:
