I'm installing a MP distributor on my 1968 charger when i noticed that the new distributor is about 90 degrees off from the original distributor. Should i change the spark plugs wires or change the drive gear? Can some one tell how to change the drive gear.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

I have the instructions sheet but thanks for sending it to me. I found another thread where nacho-rt74 had the same problem. He relocated the slot position in the oil pump shaft to make it work. How do you move it. It seems it would be easier to move the spark plugs wires.

YEST IT IS OFF... I already mounted

I opted to spin the drive gear shaft to keep same cap and wires setup than factory. Simply used a long flat screwdriver and make turn counterclock wise. This will release the drive gear from cam gear, will fit above cam gear and will be able to spin untill get the new position and gear it again clock wise. Of course you will need to PASS the step to be sure will be geared on the wished position.

The slot for the distributor drive should be parallell to the camshaft....basicly pointing front to back on the engine.  :yesnod:

Of course you can relocate the wires to wherever you want to as long as the rotor is lined up to the #1 tower on the cap and you follow the correct firing order.

yeah Ron... that is if you have a stock dist to put the number one where is marked ( some caps do have the number one labeled ) BUT with MP distributors if you keep the slot on stock position, the wires won't meet with those caps. So if you ask me, I preffer to keep the number one on cap where should it be ( pointing out to rear alt bracket ), and change the slot orientation, what is about 90º off ( 1/4 turn ). In that way externally you are still like factory books says, making easier to read your setup without think, just reading cap. Internally nobody can change accidentally or notice the diff.

So on a stock factory motor where did the  number 1 plug wire plug into the cap? What position on the cap?

Nacho-RT74

here is... if everything is correctly assemblied, on BB number one should it be pointing out close to rear alt bracket... the one attached to head

I did what Nacho said and rotated the drive gear until the rotor pointed in the right direction. The instructions said to set the initial timing to 5 degrees BTDC +/- 2. I set the timing to 7 degrees and the car seems to run OK but I get a little popping through the carb when I step on the throttle going about 35-40 MPH. do you think i should advance the timing some more.
