Only 8 channels on that one? Does that use the replaceable channel "crystals" to get different frequencies, like they had on walkie-talkies in the 70's?

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

These use big fat crystals. One for receive and one for transmit.

And yesterday this HeathKit Tube checker.......... It got used a lot last night in trying to figure out 2 radios that I have that dont work. Each radio has a tube out. Got both ordered last night. One was 2$ and the other was 4$. Back when you could fix things! Something we as a country need to get back to doing!

Johnny SixPack

Sweet radios!

I still wish I had this round wall mounted Japanese built radio my mom had when I was a kid.

Not as nice as those tube models, but it was still pretty bad@$$.

Had a sun theme to it IIRC.

Well picked up this parts radio.  Another S-20R.  Price was right. Got it home and its a post WWII unti with a different logo and tuning knobs as well as the speaker screen cover. So I guess its probably not a parts radio as there werent many made after WWII as they went to other models. I guess a restoration on it will happen sometime. Gonna have to do some sheet metal and paint work on it and some radio repair.

Charger_Fan

Yeah, that one does look like it'll need some body work. And that shot of it's innards...man, things don't get any more basic than that.

Well my other S-20R showed up today. Everyone on ebay was asleep on this one. I stole it. Super nice radio with all new caps installed.  I really didnt want it but threw a bid out thinking I would be knocked out of the game pretty fast and forgot about it. Email popped up that I was the winner!?!? So now I got 3!HAHA!  Works like a champ! Looks good!

Hey Todd, I've very much enjoyed following your thread and the beginning of your new hobby from its inception. Please keep posting and showing us and talking about your radios. I was wondering if you would like to add this radio to your collection. Its a GE model 203 with wood surround. I'm not sure if it works but plug is there and all the tubes seem to be there as well. If you will pay shipping, approx. 10.00 or less I'd guess, its yours. Please let me know! Thanks and take care.
Jeffery.

Got this 1962-63   Hallicrafters CRX-2  radio yesterday. Its a 152mhz to 174mhz unit. Sadly a tube bounced out during shipment so I have to wait on a new tube to get here to see how it works. I should be able to listen to business band stuff like the railroad and the cops.

1946 GE Model 203!  A fine wood radio made when everyone was starting to get back to their regular lives after WWII!

We'll do some clean up and testing of the unit this weekend and see what it needs to once again play!

Hallicrafters S-81 Civic Patrol!

Fighting crime this evening with the old tubes. Listening to the pigs on their freq when a disruption started on the next block over. I live by a school and this all took place on the other side. When I heard it on the radio I went to the front of my house and seen some people jacking around the front of the skool. Some were hiding and others trying to get away. Fast call to 911 on the cell and they were caught!HAHA!

Neat story! What is the age of the civil patrol radio? Is it kinda like an old "police scanner" with out the "scan"? If I'm right, aren't some city's and municipalities trying to keep the general public from listining to their patrol, fire conversations? Would the age and style of this radio "break thru" some of that kind of blockage if a city was trying to do so?
BTW, did you get a chance to check out the little RCA?

The civic patrol is an early 50's radio. 1951-53 were the years they made them. This and the CRX-2 are both early "scanners" without the scan feature.

Our town doesnt have any secret channels .Its all in the 150mhz range.  They are looking at going to the 800mhz digital mode and then you wont be able to hear anything on the old tube radios or current scanners. You would have to get a digital scanner. They can also then encrypt the freq and you wont hear a thing. This is good and bad both. Good for them because the bad guys cant hear  but bad for the cops as last night I would not have been able to hear what was going on and call in and give them the heads up.  Also this digital stuff is really cool and works great but when the going gets tough it wont be very good.

I got to stop!  My 4th Hallicrafters S-20R showed up today. Another post WWII "co" unit.   Have 2 "inc" and 2 "co" now.  These S-20R's are like Chargers. You can never have to many. This guy will need a cord  and probably caps changed.

Todd Wilson

Couldnt resist this 1938 Hallicrafters S-20   this was the early model that evolved into the S-20R radios.

Todd Wilson

Found some old tech manuals  1940 and 1949  as then a early 50's manual. Has all the tubes listed and what they do,voltages and stuff.

bigred68

Hey Todd, were you able to take a peek at the little RCA? I was just wondering if it worked at all?

Todd Wilson

Its got some capacitor issues. I plugged it in and had a flash of white light and that was it. Will need all the caps changed out of it. Pratty typical of old radios.
