Golden Throat

Like I need another hobby but I am starting to collect old tube radios.   Got this 1951 RCA Victor AM/FM Golden Throat radio today. Have a 1946 model coming in the mail.  Works and looks great. Forgot about the old school smell these old tubes put out as they glow. Kinda an odd radio as its a 1951 year radio with FM.

Here ya go, I believe this is a 1940 model Philco. I bought it at an Antique Store for $25 about 10 years ago. The tuner was missing, so I stuck a car cd/mp3 player in it and wired in a power inverter for DC. I'll get off my ass sooner or later and make the conversion look a little more like it should belong there.

HAHA!  I was wondering how long it would take for someone to reply to my message. I hope to have my other radio in a day or 2. I am looking for a big floor model WWII or before radio. They are out there and usually dont bring too much money but most wont ship one.

I've got a beautiful RCA in a cherry armoire style cabinet. It still works and still has an asbestos insulated power cord, too. It's sitting over at Ma's house. I'll snap a pic or two next time I visit.

Well my other radio showed up. A 1946 Music Air 579 AM tube radio.  Radio works great but the wood case is in need of refinishing. Had a tube get knocked out on shipment and I cleaned the on/off/volume rheostat with some cleaner and it works great!

Did a lot of clean up on the old 579 tonight. It had some paint specs on it and I was kicking around the idea of refinishing it After some razor blade shaving of the paint drops and a good wipe down with lighter fluid and then old english the old wood is starting to look decent again.

There is something about the sound of an old tube radio. They seem 'warmer' and 'richer' than a solid state radio.

Here's a couple of table tops we have.  We also have a '35 console in art deco style.

Those 2 radios are cool looking!  Right now I am looking at table top models only and a big floor console if I find the right one. Will stay away from the tombstone or cathedral radios like you have for now as I wouldnt have room for them.  I got a 1946 Hoffman A-200 on the way. Bidding now on 2 more RCA Victor Goldenthroats!


Tube radios have a way better sound then the solid state units do. I have been listening to our local AM station in the mornings on the old tube radios and then turn the little sony bathroom radio on when I am in there and it dont even sound close to the old dogs.

The one on the left is a semi survivor. It's a '33 RCA five tube and has the original finish and grille cloth but rebuilt electronically. It has a great sound.

The one on the right is a Coronado and was rescued from the junk pile two years ago. It was rebuilt by the shop in the link. The tuner is still a little scratchy.

Are you looking for post war table tops only?

Right now I dont really care what years they are as long as they have tubes. Early 50's would be about it though. Looking at some late 30's and early 40's radios right now. Would like to only have transformer tube radios right now. Not interested in the real old ones just yet.

That 1933 RCA is a beautiful piece. They just don't build ANYTHING like they used to, do they? Such a shame. I think I may have to find myself one, too. My last living grandparent still has an old tube radio that sounds beautiful. The "warmer and richer" description is extremely accurate. Especially if you find an AM station that plays '40s music. Thanks for starting this thread.

My F n B step mom threw a radio similar to this out of my Dads house after they got married because it was 'old'.  I was about 10 years old at the time and i made all the noise i could about saving it but it fell on deff "F n B" ears. . I wish i had it now.

Yeah I like the Bakelite or catalin radios as well. In fact I only got 1 wood radio right now.  Got 2 more RCA Victor Golden Throats coming in the mail right now.  There were some pretty wild designs and colors back in the 40's and 50's. Its funny all we see is B&W photos from long ago.  I always think old is B&W and they didnt live in a color world but there are some wild neon colored radios out there form back then. Some of the bakelites are bring serious $$$ for collectors.
