From his autobiography, Wanderer:

"To be truly challenging, a voyage, like a life, must rest on a firm foundation of financial unrest. Otherwise, you are doomed to a routine traverse, the kind known to yachtsmen who play with their boats at sea... cruising, it is called. Voyaging belongs to seamen, and to the wanderers of the world who cannot, or will not, fit in. If you are contemplating a voyage and you have the means, abandon the venture until your fortunes change. Only then will you know what the sea is all about. I've always wanted to sail to the south seas, but I can't afford it." What these men can't afford is not to go. They are enmeshed in the cancerous discipline of security. And in the worship of security we fling our lives beneath the wheels of routine - and before we know it our lives are gone. What does a man need - really need? A few pounds of food each day, heat and shelter, six feet to lie down in - and some form of working activity that will yield a sense of accomplishment. That's all - in the material sense, and we know it. But we are brainwashed by our economic system until we end up in a tomb beneath a pyramid of time payments, mortgages, preposterous gadgetry, playthings that divert our attention for the sheer idiocy of the charade. The years thunder by, the dreams of youth grow dim where they lie caked in dust on the shelves of patience. Before we know it, the tomb is sealed. Where, then, lies the answer? In choice. Which shall it be: bankruptcy of purse or bankruptcy of life"?

Sterling Hayden From his autobiography, Wanderer:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sterling_Hayden

He left nine years of seafaring and his early Hollywood acting career to join the Marine Corps and the OSS under the assumed name of John Hamilton in 1941. His mastery of the seas -- he was first mate on a schooner voyage around the world in 1936 and captained a ship from Gloucester, Mass., to Tahiti in 1939 -- led OSS officials to have him set up secret shipping operations based in Italy. He was attacked by the Germans and operated behind enemy lines in Croatia...

"What you lookin' at? You all a bunch of fuckin' assholes. You know why? You don't have the guts to be what you wanna be? You need people like me. You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." So... what that make you? Good? You're not good. You just know how to hide, how to lie. Me, I don't have that problem. Me, I always tell the truth. Even when I lie. So say good night to the bad guy! Come on. The last time you gonna see a bad guy like this again, let me tell you. Come on. Make way for the bad guy. There's a bad guy comin' through! Better get outta his way!"

"Next time you'll know better"- my Dad

I remember him telling me this after I was in a fight after school. No, it was not to tell me next time I will know not to fight. He told me this because:

1) I knocked the kid down a couple of times, but I let him get up and we continued fighting on our feet. This came back to haunt me. He finally got me down with a trip and then proceeded to jump on top of me and punch me a quite a few times.

2) I gave the kid quite a few uppercuts. On one occassion he saw it coming and pulled back. I hit his chin with the back of my hand right behind the third finger on my right hand. I broke my hand.

He told me this in case there was a next time with this kid. He was saying now I know what the kid's rules for fighting were and next time I put him down I was free to keep him there and pummel him. There never was a next time with this kid. Him and his buddies picked on me quite a bit up until this fight. After this fight they quit picking on me. They found out two things. First thing was I wasn't afraid to fight and second was that I knew how to fight. I may have went home with a broken hand, but his face looked worse than mine.

This doesn't have to refer to something that you specifically like at all, just something with a real purity of intention.

It applies for when Michael Jackson gets caught molesting kids a second time.  Or when a burglar gets hurt while breaking into a house and then sues the homeowner for liability.  Etc.
