If it was sitting in water, I would change the fluids before you try to turn it over again. It might even be a good idea to pull the heads and see if there is water in the cylinders. You wouldn't want water in the cylinders to freeze over the winter. That would be potentially bad for the engine. :icon_smile_big:

Just asking. The RCMP is who took the report? Which detachment? Did you get a copy of the report?

what could be done to stop this from happening again? Granted the key allowed them to move the steering wheel. Can punching the ignition allow you to move the steering wheel if the car won't start?

Pull the coil wire. The joy riders won't get the car then. The real theives come with trailers.

This sounds like a random thing. I doubt it will happen again, especailly by these guys. If it happens again they are going to be the first ones the cops stop by to see.

In a lot of places there's an "unlawful use of a vehicle" type of charge option now.  It's made to differentiate between getting caught doing temporary Ferris Bueller-type joyriding in a car that belongs to someone you know, as opposed to genuine car theft.  These two punks definitely deserve the latter treatment.  Do whatever you can to make sure they don't spin the story of this incident into something less than it was.

These guys weren't just a couple of carefree joyriders who spotted the window rolled down & key in the ignition on a sunny weekend afternoon.  They made surveillance trips, got the keys ahead of time, and brought & installed their own battery for it.

And from what you described finding, they even threw out pieces from the car at the dump.  This demonstrates that right from the beginning, they never had any intentions of you ever getting the car back at all.  They made a trip to the dump and tossed that stuff LONG BEFORE they accidentally crunched the car and abandoned it.

Gotta make sure the sentencing judge is VERY clear about all these premeditation steps, because the punks will be trying as hard as they can to portray it as a spur-of-the-moment impulsive thing now.  At that age they were definitely adults regardless of who they live with.

These two guys are NOT friends or even casual acqaintances of yours.  The two of them got together and planned this for days (weeks?) ahead of time.  And there was never any intention of you getting that car back intact later.  It may have ended up looking kind of like a joyride among friends to an outsider, since you're similar ages and the car was quickly abandoned nearby with little damage.  But GTA was definitely the intention here.  If you have any input on the legal handling of this, these points are what you want to emphasize most.

:2thumbs: alright , very cool   it's rare that you get the car back in decent shape. you got lucky.   :boogie:

now what i would do is . get an estimate from a body shop and take these guys to small claims court . blame them for every dent and scratch on the car. plus the grill . hit them, or there parents where it hurts in there pockets. then i would buy one  of those wheel boots

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TRIMAX-Ultra-MAX-WHEEL-SECURITY-LOCK-BOOT-TWL100_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZ72Q3a1240Q7c66Q3a2Q7c65Q3a12Q7c39Q3a1Q7c240Q3a1318QQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem250314189444QQitemZ250314189444

then park it in a lighted area of your yard .  :2thumbs: glad you got your car back
I won't be wronged, I wont be Insulted and I wont be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to others, and I require the same from them.

It's great you got it back with little damage. The grilles can be found easy enough with a little work. To keep it from happening again, take all the wheels off the car (buy 4 mason blocks to set it on), and cover the brakes with garbage bags, and ties them off with something. Also pull the coil & ballast resister out for the winter. Not to many theives carry spares.

Along with Dan's link for the grill, here is some more.

Here in the states if a car is broken into while parked at your house, in drive way, or in the garage, the Homeowners Insurance covers it.  I had my CD player stolen out of my truck, the car insurance would not cover it, but my homeowners did.  You might try that.

And it sounded definatlye premeditated.  They had to have a battery, and had been at your house on previous occassion "casing the joint."

What a drag!

I predict that the car will be found virtually untouched in the next few weeks and will be back in the hands of the owner with a wild story to add to the history of the car!

Good luck!

Well, I guess my gut feeling was only off by the amount of time it took for the car to re-appear!

Did you get some photos of the damage?

Sounds like it's time to lawyer up and make these punks do you a favor. Maybe you'll get a free paint job out of the deal. :yesnod:

I doubt the thieves will suffer any punishment at all. remember the cover of the province an few months back? had the pictures of the #1 car thieves in BC. i think they stole between 20 and 60 cars each. they are all out stealing more cars as we speak.

take the punks to small claims. don't need a lawyer for that.
