Site Update

I tried to do this over the weekend but it took nearly a whole day to transfer all the files to the new server (lots of pictures). I finally got it all set up this morning so I'm going to go ahead and transfer everything today at 12:30 Eastern time. You should initially see a message that the site is being updated and then (hopefully) you'll see an updated forum on the new server. Sorry for any inconvenience but there doesn't seem to be a really good time to do this and it's long overdue.

I think that's fixed - although I had to hack the forum code to do it (which means it will likely break the very next time I have to change anything). I'll see if there's a better "fix" after I have some sleep. Apparently finding the new server wasn't too difficult for anyone. Let me know if anything else is screwy.

Yes, but that has no effect on this problem. Funny, I read about 40 posts on the SMF forum that stated exactly the same thing. This has been around since the switch to 1.1 and it doesn't appear that anyone has posted the fix. Well, from what I can tell, there's a new IF statement that checks to see if the attachment is an image and anything posted before the update returns false. There's a new "attachmentType" column in the database but it isn't used so, as far as I can tell, it's actually checking the size ("width" and "height") to see if it's an image. That information doesn't exist in the database for the older attachments since those are new columns in the 1.1 branch. The update seemed to hang when it got to the "thumbnails" so maybe that's what it was supposed to be fixing. I guess it overloads the system when you have 88,000 pictures...

It looks like about 100,000 other sites too. That's why they call it a "template". ;) In the beginning, Cuda-Challenger.com looked a lot like us but they were forced to update a lot sooner. Honestly, there isn't a lot of difference other than color and more of the buttons are rounded. It will change again.

Having lots of pictures is great! Until you need to move them or do any sort of bulk operation.

I'm still playing with the settings. Any "features" that were changed in the new version generally go back to the default (usually off). The recent posts for example used to be on/off but now you can choose a number. I'll turn that back on. I'm still playing with settings to see if we've lost anything or gained anything useful. Sadly, one of the reasons for the upgrade was the image resizer.... which still doesn't work. I'm saving that for another day.

I just noticed another thing...this site seems to be REALLY fast now! Is that part of the upgrade?

what about the repair_settings.php?

Before reading my posts please understand me by clicking
HERE, HERE, AND HERE.

It does exactly what it says - repairs settings (usually file paths and such). Those are all fine. If you upload a new image it works but the existing images don't. The same thing happened on Cuda-Challenger when they upgraded but I don't think they ever got it fixed (and then they accidentally deleted most of the files any way which made it a moot point). My only other option seems to be to re-run the update and hope it doesn't make matters worse. Since I've got it working now I'm not going to mess with it. I may use the old server to test a few things since I still have it for a couple of days.

Although I'll really like it if that image resizing actually works. That is the main reason I'm so lazy about posting pictures. I get distracted when I start sorting through folders on my computer to resize a picture, and next thing you know I forgot what picture I was looking for.

Haha, I think I turned that off. Last time everyone complained because Each time it goes back to the edit screen you need to upload any attachments all over again. For example, if a person were to start a thread about their new car or some progress on a project and needed to upload a bunch of pictures they'd get derailed by that message as soon as people started responding. It may take several attempts to get the post to go through and it's very frustrating. Maybe that's fixed in this version but I kinda doubt it.

That's the way it used to be on the old (Jesse's) site, if I recall. So us old timers shouldn't have a problem with that...it's just all these newbies that'll be lost for a while.

Thanks for all you're doing, and I'm glad you know WHAT you're doing. Me, I bet I'd screw it up royally. ::)

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Troy

Ok, I figured out the image deal - the install screwed up. Hopefully that's all that didn't work correctly. I ran the update on the old server and it went perfectly fine (in less than 15 minutes too) so I copied the data. After that I promptly broke the old server trying to make the image resizer work and now it's completely dead. I'm not too excited about trying that here now.

Troy
Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Troy

Got the image resizer to work and it's pretty disappointing. All it does is make clickable thumbails but the original image still has to be within the limits. Glad I didn't break the server for that!

I've noticed that some of my older pm's in inbox are not there anymore. I guess they got deleted to clean up some space?

I didn't delete anything. According to the backups you have exactly the same number of PMs as you did before the upgrade. The oldest one currently in your inbox is from the end of July 2005. :shruggy:

I won't be wronged, I wont be Insulted and I wont be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to others, and I require the same from them.

I don't mind the upgrade at all, but, as stated already by others, it looks a lot like C-C.com. I understand it's a template and all that, and I don't mind if it's the same template, but could you at least change the colour from blue to something else? Just an idea...

From a different thread.............

Yeah, yeah, working on it. I had to pick the default theme to get some of the features I wanted but I working on migrating to another. I wanted to make sure it was functional before worrying too much about the looks.

Troy
Yes, the template will change. Yes, the color will change. It could be worse... I could have lost all the pictures, deleted all the posts, or broken half the site...

Yep, in the "Forum Stats" just under "Latest Post: ...". The one at the top (if there was one) with the user information is gone along with the PM stats. I'm probably going to remove that latest post list but I'm still playing with the layout.

It looks just fine as-is IMO. I'm never on C-C.com so I don't give a rat's a$$ if it looks the same or not.
