Laptop acting up

Well this all started with simply trying to watch a movie (.avi) on my laptop. Normally they load and play fine in Windows Media Player 11. Instead this time I simply get an error saying it has to close. I tried DivX and get the same problem! I finally tried VLC but the movie is all screwed up (IE wrong colors, bad graphics etc).

I looked in Device Manager to make sure nothing was wrong or disabled and came across something that was:

ENE CB-712/714/810 Cardbus Controller

So I re-enabled it and then restarted the computer. When I did this though windows failed to load. I went into safe mode and disabled it again and when I restarted windows loaded normally.

Now the movie file still won't play and the Cardbus Controller is still disabled.

What is going on?

Could just be a bad AVI file.

Or it was made with codecs that you don't have installed.

it's not just ONE AVI file it's ALL OF THEM! They all worked last time I had my laptop going about 2 weeks ago.....

Nothing has changed since then....

have you tried system restore?
