Power steering gear box

Yesterday I pulled off my carbs. and rejetted everything. It runs good. So today I needed to regrease the steering column coupler because the old grease was melting and started to ooze out. I pulled the steering column off and regreased the coupler and then I put everything back together. I looked underneath the car and found a puddle of power steering fluid  :bawling:.  I checked all the power steering hoses and nothing was leaking. I then crawled underneath the car to look at the gear box itself. I found steering fluid running down from the spline and running down the bottom of the unit. I guess the worm seal is shot. Funny thing is, I have been finding drips of power steering fluid on the floor and I thought it was coming from a hose. Now I have to pull the column out again and pull the whole gear box out and replace it  :cryin:. I replaced this gear box about 14 yrs. ago. I still have the receipt. I am pissed.   Just ranting. Can the gear box be removed from under the car? Just wondering because I have headers and don't think I can take it out thru the engine compartment. I am running TTI 1 7/8 headers. I am hoping I don't have to loosen up the header.

Actually, I don't think that it can be removed from up top.  The only way I have removed mine is from under the car.

Next month I'm going to tilt the motor up and remove the header :bawling:. That is the only way to get the steering gear box out. It will not come out thru the top.

Bottom Sector Shaft Seal ?

Can the Steering Arm be removed in the car, and the seal replaced ?

It is the seal that is under the collar on top.

oldschool

you can replace the seal while the steering box is still in the car. i have replaced the same seal in all of my cars, and on some friends cars.its not hard to do,and takes about 1 hour.you can buy the seals at advance auto.
you need to take the collum out.then take a sharp punch and punch it thru the face of the seal. then just pry out the seal. put sealer on the new on and use a deep socket the same size as the seal, and drive it in place.its VERRY easy to do,even with headers.  :yesnod:

Oldschool thanks for the tip. Since it is 15yrs old I'm thinking about replacing it any way with a new Cop Box.

oldschool are you talking about the seal under that big nut with those tangs? I might try changing that first before pulling the whole gear box out.
