Engine is a mild 430hp 440ci motor. What oil do you suggest? What spark plug and wires? :2thumbs: :coolgleamA:

There is a table at the end of the first page that indicates that the Penzoil GT and the Royal Purple Racing have enough zinc and phosphorus in them without using an additive.

I use the VR1 Valvoline racing oil it has zinc in it and some parts stores carry it.  Love AC plugs always have good luck with them.  Champion plugs failed on everthing from my lawn mower to big block motors.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Ron,

Even WITH the VR1 race oil, you still need to add the bottle of EOS?  I know it doesn't hurt anything by adding it, but is it necessary?

How much power would get robbed from using a thick oil like the 20w50 vs. the 10w30 or 10w40?  I myself use the VR1 20w50 but have been told many a times that it is too thick and I am robbing myself of power.

It's true on the Super Stock level but for the average street car I wouldn't worry about it.

 :iagree: with Ghoste....not enough parasitic loss to be concerned about. Oil Pressure is a life saver when you're sitting in traffic and the engine heats up.  ;)

Race guys pull up to the line, burnout, stage, make a pass then sit in the pits and cool down....the oil never really gets heated up as much as your typical street driven cruiser/hotrod.  :yesnod:

ah, ok.  So then 20W50 it is.  The only downfall I see is that the oil gets REALLY thick in the cold.  Dads el camino and moms chally vert sit outside in one of those portable Cover-it garages.  When he starts it up in the winter, I am concerned that the oil might be too thick and not start moving immediately causing premature wear on the engine.  Any thoughts on this? :scratchchin:

My first thought is get them in a proper garage but I know they'd be there already if that were feasible.  Perhaps a block heater or a portable space heater placed in front of the car for a short while prior to starting?  How cold does it get where you live?

I could not find the EOS additive you speak of and was wondering where to get it/order it and if it is needed when  running Comp Cams roller rockers as I do in my 440? Also, What part number is it for the NGK plugs and do you know if they come in the short variety in order to install them around my headers?

As mentioned by the previous poster....EOS is avilable at your local GM dealer parts counter. You can also use Comp Cams breakin lube or ZZDP+

I like the NGK XR5 plugs when using pump gas compression and factory Iron heads. These are std. dimension plugs, FYI

I am trying to understand some of the terminology;

Comp cam and roller rockers have nothing to do with flat tappets....Is this correct?

When we talk about flat tappets we are referring to the Lifters, weather hydraulic or solid.......Is this correct?

So the only time you would NOT need additives added to your oil is when you have roller lifters... is this correct?

Andy, i went and looked at your website (nice car  :icon_smile_big:) and realized that you are running a set of Eddy RPM heads....you didn't mention that when asking for a plug recommendation.  :P

The XR5's are a 13/16 plug for stock heads and you need a 5/8 plug for alum heads.  :yesnod:

The correct NGK plug for your application is the BCPR-6ES

I don't know what Cam you have in your engine but if it's a flat tappet (hydralic or solid) the EP additive is cheap insurance. The added protection won't hurt any other stress points in the valvetrain either. Rocker arms, valve tips and pushrods are all under tremendous loads so it's important to have a good lubrication package with lots of Exteme Pressure additives to prevent premature wear or even worse, failure of those components.  :yesnod:
