If it's free, then why do they need my credit card number?  because that's how they roll. They are banking on the fact that many people will forget to unsubscribe and they get to take you money for nothing.

In maine you can get a credit report free from all 3 every year with no credit card needed.
check NY law and see if it's the same there.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

That's a federal law. You need to go to this webpage:

http://www.ftc.gov/freereports

that will give you all the info as well as a link to the actual page where you can request a credit report from any of the 3 credit report companies.

Since there are 3 and you're entitled to a free report each year from each of them, what you should do is request one of them every 4 months or so which will allow you to keep track of any credit during the entire year.

that rocks!!!  thanks!! they did try to scam me in the middle, but at least you have the option to NOT give a cc#....thanks for the linky!!

The reason it helps to have all three is that they are usually different. Not every lender checks or reports to all three. The charge (I believe) is for the ongoing credit monitoring service - not to get your "free" report.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Its' important to stay away from business websites that want to sell you services along with the reports.

Now watch what you say or they'll be calling you a radical,
      a liberal, oh fanatical, criminal.
Won't you sign up your name, we'd like to feel you're
acceptable, respectable, oh presentable, a vegetable!

Also the more credit checks done lowers your score. Yeah pretty crazy that you lose points tying to get a better deal on a loan  :eyes:

I signed up for a no annual fee washington mutual credit card. I don't plan on using it but I get free access to my FICO score.
