Nascarxx29, I also prefer the sequential VIN layout (it would be interesting to include body color on this layout). On  that list of 501 I had seen two doubles (356523 and 386558) and a labeled space (someone must have erased the car info but not number?). I also see that you list 388881 as not on list, is this a known car?  BTW how many hemi cars do you have on your list?
I ended up with a few "holes" in the senquences, do you have anything on 355109, 386539 and 410792 (and maybe 423237)?

nascarxx29

There are some gaps and inconsistencies theres no exact science when it comes to Chrysler there are Superbirds that exist .That are not listed in the 1920 Nascar List.I have the early version #385 daytona list .And they found more pages. Its at #501.Working from that. Cars I have recorded at shows newsletters archives. And ones from the internet recorded etc.And trying to get them in order. So far we put the 2 daytona shiplist in order by vin on a re writeable CD .To make notes aside certain cars and can sort by vin sequence or by states. As I tried to do in the daytona per state totals. So I will look and see if I have any info on those your asking on.I hand wrote alot of material .And now its getting on the CD.Yes Ive seen same vin car at different dealers just to name a few mistakes like XX29L9B355126 its car#154+#132 same vin going to SC+TN.And old and new newsletters records have color trans and related recorded down inncorectly .Thats why these board discussions sometimes sort out certain details. When the details are given by someome who has a first hand account.

We sold L386539 to Jeff Phillips in 1977.   This was the car with the bullet hole in the drivers door.   Jeff restored the car to the orange custom paint job featured in the magazines and installed a Hemi.   The special order number may be on the shipments list, but the car had no fender tag and I don't have the number myself.    I will scan and post some as found pics later tonight.

A couple nights ago, I ran across the VIN list of all the aero cars that passed through our family.  I was surprised to see it was 14 cars.  9 Birds, 3 Daytonas and 2 Cyclones.

I dont know for sure which way he leaned to .But I get the impression he liked Superbirds before Daytonas.Maybe as Superbirds were easy and in greater numbers. He had them first .And called the early club by this name.My longtime family friend Joe donated me his wingcar memorabilia when he retired and sold his car that he got in 73

Seems that your families collection was the opposite of my dad's. He went the way of 5 Daytona's, 2 Superbirds, and 2 500's. Now I add in another 500. But not as high as your families 14. Due to my lack of additions I think.

QuoteDid your dad lean too favoring birds or where they just more avaliable doug ?

I would say it had to do with what cars were available more than anything else.

In the case of the L386539 Daytona, he flew to Detroit to look at the car and drive it back.  He had no idea how bad the car really was until he got there.     He was leaning towards walking away from it.  The car had this (surprise) bullet hole in the door that the owner didn't want to talk about.   It had a massive oil leak.   Had an old vinyl top removed and they painted over the scaly rust.  No back bumper,  fun fur covering  the back seat, one snow on the right front.    The one good thing was the nose, it was perfect.

Well the owner wanted $2600 or something.  Dad said no way, and the owner talked him into stopping for lunch at a Pizza Hut.   So over lunch, dad tells him again, "I don't think so".  This went back and forth several times, and dad really just wanted to walk away.  The owner then decided to throw a Hail Mary of  "Look, I  REALLY have to sell the car", which you could read into as "See large caliber bullet hole in drivers door".    So dad offered him $1100 which he took.   Dad figured if the rest of the car was junk, the nose was worth that.     And he didn't have to worry about how to get back across Detroit to the airport.

Here's a photo from the day it came home.

Here's the front end.

The engine bay gives you a general idea of the overall condition.   That's a 383 in there.   Today, we'd call this a "solid project".    Back then, as a 7 year old car, it was pretty bad.

You can see the A4 silver by the firewall.

Aero426

The car was bought in the fall of 1977.   In January of '78 we delivered it to Jeff Phillips.    I took this the morning after we loaded it up.    We had to shovel the drive to get dad on his way.

Our next door neighbor who is now 87 years old did the artwork for those cards.    When the name changed to DSAC a couple years later, he just took the scoop off the design.

Were into the number aspects as the longtime handed down accepted 426 hemi daytona numbers is 70.Combo of 48 AT and 22 4 speed with no vins to support that number. The daytona list which doesnt list trans. But has vin info .Has 36 actual vins for 426 daytona.

The longtime accepted given numbers
  [Auto 342] [4 speed 161] [Auto 440-4 375 HP 294] [4 Speed 440-4 375 HP 139] [Auto 426-8 425 HP 48] [4 Speed 426-8 425 HP 22] Giving a total of #503

This shows what states did and did not recieve a 69 daytona .Starting with the 440s AL-11 AZ-5 AR-2 CANADA 45 CA-38 CO-12 CON-2 DE-1 FL-16 GA-16 HAWAII-2 ID-1 IL-22 IN-21 IA-3 KAN-7 KEN-5 LOU-7 ME-1 MD-2 MASS-5 MI-26 MINN-3 MISS-1 MO-21 MONT-1 NEB-4 NV-2 NH-2 NJ-6 NY-26 NC-13 NDKT-1 SDKT-4.OH-25 OK-9 ORE-7 PA-23 RI-3 SC-4 TN-5 TX-20 UT-1 VT-1 VA-13 WA ST-7 WA-DC-2 W VA-1 WI-9-The 426 states AZ-1 CANADA-5 CA-7 CO-3 GA-1 IL-1 IN-1 KAN-1 MD-1 MI-2 MO-1 NY-1 NC-1 OH-3 PA-1 SC-1 TX-3 WVA-1 WI-1 .Total #501 465- 440 Hemi-36 for the 47 states 1 line was unreadable unknown state. 2 cars were 440 dodge exec cars with no dealer location in house cars and figured in with the MI total.Only #3 states didnt recieve 69 Daytona on this current list Alaska-New Mexico-Wyoming. But with dealer to dealer trades and factory vin mistakes etc.Cars that were executives or used for show purposes.Or had no dealer info ones issued to nascar drivers as personal cars .This is just a estimate going by the list pages issued

That is why I asked since I could only see 36 or so J-codes on that shipping list. I did not think that this could be correct since there must be almost that many accounted for today?   Which poses another question; Of the Hemi cars that you know of do any VIN's not match the 36 that are on the shipping list?

69_500

I don't know if there are any of the "known" Hemi Daytona's that don't fall on the shipment list. I think the last time I did a count of "known" HEMI Daytona's I think I came up with 26 or 27.

nascarxx29

In 1988 there was a compiled list of daytonas from I guess from newsletter archive owner submissions and etc  .I dont think that list had 70 hemi daytonas on it at that time .And what new ones could be added today from ones found on the web??That 70 number if a factory handed down myth .Same as the numbers of 69 charger 500 is not etched in stone
