1977 Dodge Aspen R/T...yes I know they made those but this guy comes up to me today to ask me what a DA R/T with a 360 4 gear with 390 HP  is worth.:o  I said "what?"  No way they made that in 77' but I could be wrong so I'm asking the audience.  I know they made one with 170 HP but a 4spd?  Anyway, I've seen the car every time I go to the race track and it is very nice  and this guy has a lot of stuff.  Need some help so this guy knows what he is getting...owner claims it's original.  Which begs the question, did he build it to make 390hp and stuffed a grinder in there or what.  Any help would be appreciated.  Oh yeah, he wanted 21k for it, then called a week later and says he'd give it to him for 15k, calls him yesterday and says 9800 and it's yours.  I'm thinking more like 5k tops(and it better be mint) unless it is some rare jewel.
Thanks

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

If the 4 speed is original the car originally came with a 225 or 318! Most often than not though the Aspens had the Automatic or 3 Speed Manual transmissions.

Mike is right, no 360 engines with manual trannies.....

I'm on it, thanks for the response.  I didn't think so, but I will now have to go and check this dang thing out for myself.  I always wanted to stop but hauling a huge trailer and needing to get to the track, really never had the chance, and when we went home totally black outside and late.   I gotta tell you though from what I've seen of the car, I'd pay 5k if I had it to spend cause it is really nice even though the owner doesn't really have anything too special IMO.  What a great daily though :2thumbs:

Check those codes before saying it's not possible.
If you look at the list and decide you want the E58 360 4bbl.Now you slide over to the trans list and it lists only torqueflight and slide over a little more and it says optional. If you didn't want to pay for that option would they sell you a car without a trans??
Yea sure it's a wording error on their part.but you never know.

I thought the optional was for a 727 or the 904?  :shruggy: I've heard of Aspens coming with either....

Never That much!

http://www.allpar.com/model/aspen-volare-specs.html

It states there that the 360-2 was 155hp in 1977 and in 1978 the 360-4 was only 160hp....

Whether that's true or not I have no idea since:

Quotetests from car magazines of the day revealed that the 1977 360-engined Aspen, with a two barrel carb, was about on a par from zero to sixty miles per hour as the 1977 Camaro Z28 and Corvette L82, both with four barrel 350s. All three of these cars were faster than the 1977 Trans Am 400-4. The Aspen was a bit slower by the clock but faster through the traps in the quarter mile than all of the other three from GM.

And as for Transmissions:

QuoteAvailable transmissions included the A230 3 speed (Slant Six only), the A833 4 speed overdrive (Slant Six and 318-2 only), and the A904 and A998/999 Torqueflite 3 speed automatics. These were coupled with either the Chrysler 7 1/4 inch rear axle (for Slant Six coupe and sedan, non-towing applications) or the Chrysler 8 1/4 axle for the wagon, heavy duty, and V8 versions. Axles were available in 2.45, 2.76, 2.94, and 3.23 to 1 ratios, depending upon transmission and engine. Sure-Grip limited slip axles were optional. Torqueflites got a lockup torque converter in 1978 for non-heavy duty engines.

And yet my Aspen has a numbers matching 727....

QuoteThe 1976 360 engine was available with the bulletproof 727 transmission.

Can't take everything you read on Allpar seriously! They like to contradict themselves!  :icon_smile_big:

HERE IS SOMETHING:

QuoteRarely seen was the "Richard Petty Kit Car." For those wishing to plunk down an extra thousand dollars or so, Plymouth offered a Volare coupe decked out like a short-track race car. Available in both Plymouth and Dodge versions, the Plymouth came in standard two-tone blue, dark blue sides with a light blue hood and fender flares (the Dodge version was two-tone red). Standard equipment included a 318 V-8 with choice of two or four-barrel carburetion or a four barrel 360 V-8 and automatic transmission. (Canadian cars were available with manual transmissions). Kit cars came with a huge door number decal (it was shipped in the trunk for dealer installation), bearing the number 43, which, of course, was the number on Richard Petty's race cars which were also painted blue. The 360-equipped cars were shipped with hood decals denoting the larger powerplant.

I'm gonna try to get the VIN and tag info...then I will proceed to talk my buddy out of the car and buy it myself :D
Kidding, but man, wouldn't that be something..sans the 390hp BS. :icon_smile_big:

Mike, I know the motor that was in Shelby's Super Coupe was a 360 police interceptor motor. But I don't know what HP it's rated at.  :scratchchin:

UFO

This helps confirm the hp numbers.
To mess things up a little more the hp numbers on the trucks are 10-15 higher.

I would love to have 390hp running under my hood, as it stands Im just hitting 300....

Remember though for Aspens/Volares you want the fender tag info! That is the only thing that will tell you exactly what the car is!  :icon_smile_big:

Just as I suspected.

I'm in to it though cause like I said I've seen this car all summer and it reminds me of the Super(duper pooper) Scouper(no offense to Shel)

I want this car and now that I know he wants to dump it(reminder 21k to 9800 in less than 3 weeks)

Gotta talk my buddy out of it first though.  This is why I don't want friends.

Ok I think it's come to the conclusion that it MIGHT be a real 4-spd (although from what I can gather only Canadian cars had them with the 360's and only if it was the "racing" package) but no matter what that engine won't even push 300hp stock! 390hp is more than a stock HEMI I believe in 1969?
