How will changing from 14" to 15" wheels affect the odometer/speedometer readings?

Hemidog

not as long as the tire diameter is the same.

There is actually an online convertior which tells you what kind of speedo pinion drive you will need. I know because I am changing from 14 to 15 myself and there is a difference.

If I find the link i will post it, but you might try just Googling "Mopar speedo pinion chart" or something like that.

I reckon it's a huge difference - I wouldn't have said that until I tried my mates 15 inch rims though.

I have 14 inch Magnums at the moment. Another guy near me has 15's on his 71 Charger and one day we put them on to see if it made a difference.....bloody oath it made a difference. So much so that i got my money together and bought a set of 15inch Rallye rims.

I have a 1972 Charger that had 14" Cragar rims all the way around. The front tires were too small, they were 205/70R14 and made the car look and handle bad.  I had 235/70R14 on back. I found 2 15" rims and I put them on back with 235/70R15 and move the 235/70R14 up front. That has made a HUGE difference in looks and handling. The look was the main thing. While there is only an inch difference from what I had on back to what I have on back now, I am sure my speedo is off. If anything it is reading slower, but I am not really concerned about it. I did this as a quick fix, but my goal is 15" all the way around. I have some before and after pics with the smaller tires up front and then with the staggered 14" and 15".

Ah, I see....15" is for sure the way to go. :2thumbs:

I found it made a huge difference in the appearance of my car too.  Going from 14 to 15 inch Magnum 500's wouldn't seem to alter the look but I got a lot of comments after doing it about how much more aggresive it made the car look with the wheel wells a little fuller.

I'd go bigger 15" or more, it should help firm up the older car. Another tire calculator like above http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

There is absolutely no effect on speedometer readout when changing wheel size.  It is the overall tire height change that effects speedometer readout.  For example, if you have 14" rims with 27" tires and you change to 15, 16, or 17" rims with 27" tires the speedometer will still read the same for all three rim sizes.

This is absolutely correct.  You have to be careful about your comparison.

Example: If you compare a 275/60-14 to a 275/60-15 there is 1 inch height difference. This WILL change your speedo.

You will need different tires for the 15" wheels anyway. If you like the height of the tires you have just stick with it. You can even go wider as long as you keep the tire height the same...

Well, got my 15 inch rims. Can't wait to get the trim rings though.....looks pretty bare without them.

I'm actually ready to get them now. Just waiting on the mob that sells them to tell me what the 8 inch trim rings look like on a Rallye wheel before I buy. Usually people just use the 7 inch trims on 8 inch wheels but I want the very best "fit" possible. The guy I'm dealing with is going to test them out and tell me which looks better.

When he gets back to me I'll buy the best ones.
