I have a 68 charger that came with with a remote mirror on the right side. the previous owner put on an after market mirror and put bondo over the holes. I purchased a mirror and hardware from a swap meet but i cant figure out how the mirror attaches to the base and the base attaches to the car. any picture would help Thanks

You should post a picture of the parts first.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

:shruggy:  That's what I thought but those 68's are strange beasts.

Dodge Don

Yeah, remote on left and manual on right (if so optioned)

To answer your question, the bolt on the mirror goes through the base and then through the top of the door skin.  It's held by a nut on the inside of the door and this will hold the works together.  It also takes a screw in the end of the base going into the door skin.

pb24

Thanks for your help. I haven't punched the hole out in the door skin but it looks like a large hole to fit the cable and the controller through the hole and there will be nothing for that nut to bite on. I'm going to punch out the hole tonight and maybe it will make sense.

Ghoste

It's a while since I had one off the car so I can't really remember how big the holes are but I would think somebody here must have a car apart right now and could map you out a template.

pb24

I punched out the bondo that they had used to fill the holes in. It makes a lot more sense now, the only thing is the way the cable is routed instead of a straight shot through the door the cable has to bend 90 degrees and then another 90 degrees through the large hole. Is this correct?

I'd have to take my door panel off to be sure but I seem to recall it as being more of a loop in there than a couple of hard 90's?  Somebody must have one apart or a better memory than me though.

pb24

Please don't go through the hassle of taking your door panel off. The three cables are behind the stud but the hole on top of the door that the cable goes through is in front of the stud.

I just put My remote on My 73.
Different Year but it's gotta work the same way.
The cables have to clear the glass so on mine, The cables go through the hole that You described and go to the front of the door where there should be a small hole that You would insert a push clip that holds the cables there.
From there the cables go to to the hole where the controller comes out the door.
About 4 inches below where the controller comes out is another small hole for a second push clip to hold the cables in place.
Basically they just wrap around the front of the glass.
There are several 90,s in the cable routing.
Never looked at a 68 cable routing but Mabey this will help.
Good luck.
