I just bought a 72 Runner and it didnt come with keys. I want to be able to move the car around but the column is locked and I dont want to destroy anything.

I tried to get the roll pin out of the steering coupler today but it wouldnt budge. I tried to drill the pin out but have wasted about 4 drill bits and still cant get the coupler off the shaft. Anybody have and ideas?

RD

pull the steering wheel off, take the turn signal switch off, remove the front steering housing by removing the retainer snap ring first then pull the housing away from the middle housing.  once in the middle housing, you can either:  (1) remove the ignition tumbler (2) pull the ignition switch off by removing the three screws that hold it to the middle steering housing OR (3) and probably the easiest, remove the two screws that secure the steering wheel lock and push the lock up and out of the way so that you may turn the steering wheel.

let me know if you need further guidance.

Im sure nacho will chime in or other 3rd gen guys, im not too familiar with the locking system...but why cant you just remove the cylinder, bring it to a locksmith and have a key made for it?

Edit: RD beat me to it...thar ya go

BTW good luck with the car...shessh sure are alot of leaves in there

Wow, sure are altot of leaves under the hood. Is that a six pack air cleaner?   :2thumbs:

Can you hire a wrecker to hall it to your place? Thats what I would do, then mess around with the column later.

ask uncle Jesse to call Cooter since he's just standing there.   :icon_smile_big:

FLG

Looks to me like its atleast an original 440 car because if you look carefully you can see the #'s "440" on the hood...though i cant make out if theres a "+6" after that.

Isnt there only 7 or so accounted for?

if you don't mind buying a new cylinder and lock set(about $35) jab a flat head screwdriver into the ignition keyhole with a hemmer till it's in there really good, then twist and pull on it for a bit. the whole cylinder will come out.. then you can reach the screwdriver in the hole and turn the lever manually to get it into neutral. no i'm not a thief but i was told it worked, so i tried it recent;y when i got a 70 coronet 4 door for parts. sure enough, worked perfect

easier to pull the door cylinder and have a key made for that. unless the ignition is different.

mikesbbody

If that is a true 72 440 6 pack car then you have one of the rarest mopars ever made  :2thumbs: remember the 6 pack option was dropped for 72 but depending on who you talk too, 2 72 RR and 2 72 rallye chargers left the factory that year with the 6 pack option that was never meant to be...even if its a added 6 pack still a very cool car  :2thumbs:

High Impact

Thanks for the info.  I think I will try having a key made off the door lock cylinder.  Heres a couple more pics of the car.  Its got a 4speed and a Dana 60 with the rear sway bar!

1972Rallye

Well, If it has a 4-speed/Dana, then the 6 bbl was probably an add-on.  The early literature says no 4 speeds with the 440-6.  NEVER say never with Mopar, though.

You can help us all and tell us what that 5th digit in the VIN is.....  :2thumbs:

Whatever the case, Thats a very cool car !! Keep us posted!  :drool5:

:'(  Sadly its not the rarest car out there,  but it is a true U code 440-4gear-Dana car.   In the glove box is the original window sticker and its a number matching car. (minus the intake and carb)

It came with a TON of extras:  a 1970 Cuda 440-6pack motor another 1971 440 motor,  a 18 spline 4speed :icon_smile_big:  A 340 Road Runner hood and fender, the original rally wheels and a aluminum SUPER SIX intake off a Spirt of 76 Duster! :yesnod:

The car is rusty but could be restored.   Its the best thing I've ever brought home and I still cant believe I got it and all the parts for what I paid :2thumbs:

RD

awesome buy... with lots of goodies.. congrats and cant wait to see some pics when  you clean her up a little... just so we can gauge the rust/interior and stuff.

your plans at this point (i understand if they may change, mine always do)?

My original plans was to transfer the drivetrain over to my 72 Rallye Charger.  My Rallye car was a 340 4speed car that was loaded with options but somewhere through the years the 340 was replaced with a 440.  This Road Runner has the original motor which would be the right year for my Rallye car..............but Im not sure at this point what to do.   This car is alittle ruff ,  The rear frame rails are bad and alittle bit on the outer tortion bar part next to the rocker on the drivers side.  other than that is not bad.

I've already had a few people offer to buy it but Im not real sure what its worth :shruggy:

I'll get it cleaned up soon and figure out what I really have.   I did get a key made for the ignition today!!!   Only cost me $20.00 and did it while I waited!   Atleast I can push it around now :2thumbs:
