I would leave that northern route (66) for the summertime. Flagstaff can get a fair amount of snow. Try Hwy 54 to Las Cruces, then I10 to Tucson :2thumbs:

I've spent quite a bit of time in the southwest, and you really have a lot of great choices.  To mention just a couple of my favorites... Canyon De Chelly in Arizona and Chaco Canyon in New Mexico.

The Grand Canyon is awesome in it's size, but I prefer the beaty and sheer white and straight drop cliffs of De Chelly.  Truly striking, and you won't have to fight as many people.

Chaco Canyon is an archeological wonder, and is also less subject to the bigger crowds of, say, a place like Mesa Verde. (though I still love Mesa Verde)

There's me picks!

We made the trip with no problems or incidents! This is my last day before heading back to work tomorrow so I better get started on showing you all the great time we had. This was just a sight seeing trip since we both never been to the area except flying to Vegas a few years ago. On average we drove 8 hours a day......thank god fuel prices were down  :yesnod: Lots of pics and most are through the windshield with an old camera so bear with me :-\  Nothing much in Kansas to see ( thats the reason for the vacation ) First day We left Topeka. Some wind generators in OK....Kansas doesn't have so many unless your in the western part. An OK HP Charger caught a Toyota. I got clocked doing 85 in a 75 a couple times on the trip but bigger fish were out there I guess  ;D. We stopped by the Route 66 Museum in OK. Cool old Dodge fuel truck  :2thumbs: Oh yeah....Santa Monica Pier was the farthest point west.

The front desk at the museum is pretty cool with a HOTTIE for TuffCat. My 57 was this color too....no I don't miss it! The ole lady is spending money  :P A couple shots through the Albuquerque corridor. Coors exit...no time for a brewski though. An old route 66 iron bridge. We drove all the way through NM on day 2. Last pic here is the snow starting to show as we head for Flagstaff AZ. The guard rail didn't fare too well on the right.

Flagstaff AZ got about 3 foot of snow a day or so before Christmas  :eek2: so we hit a motel instead of a State Park as previously planned.  Stumpy had his own bed too. I talked to the guy in the truck in the motel parking lot. He had one shovel and a burnt out clutch......sorry man I gotta go  :'( So day 3 we head to the Grand Canyon!!!

Lower elevation had no snow but as we headed near the south rim they had plenty. Note the deer belly deep in the snow.

Down the icy road from the canyon and on to VEGAS / Hoover Dam Lake Mead area  :boogie: We didn't make it before it got dark. We were stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for like 2.5 hours because of the security check on the road to the dam.  :P We stayed at this Lake Meade campground that night and woke up to this on day 4  :icon_smile_big:
