Didn't all the 'H' code Chargers come with 26" radiators?

This has got to be one of Ma Mopars biggest blunders. Seems every big block 22 inch rad car I have ever come across has cooling issues.

You got the 26 inch rad with A/C, towing package, or a Track Pack. Otherwise you got the puny 22 inch.

It probably wasn't an issue in the time when they were new and had stock cams and manifolds and no scale in the block or rad and less traffic on the roads and better gas and so on and so on.

My 68, originally a 383 car with A/C has a 26in rad opening. The 70 R/T with a 440 and no A/C has a 22in rad. The 70 R/T has 3.23 gears...i believe that with 3.55 and up gears the bigger rad was standard equipment.

TrakPak and Super TrakPak cars came with the heavy duty cooling and the shorter gears. Just the shorter gears alone didn't get you the bigger radiator.

I only recently realized that there was a Medium-Cool package in addition to the Maximum-Cool package.  I had previously assumed MaxCool was optioned on all cars that had anything other than the standard radiator.  The radiator selection for a given engine was based on transmission, A/C, tow package, and axle ratio selections.  There's another lengthy thread on the same basic topic:

A lot of the same things apply to 383 HP (4bbl) cars as for 440 cars - Standard (22") / Medium (26" 2core) / Max Cooling (26" 3core) packages were about the same and used pretty much the same selection parameters.

If you got into the 3.54/3.55 or numerically higher gear ratios, you would get a 26" radiator.   Whether it was a 2-core 26" radiator or 3-core 26" radiator depended on some other factors.

TrackPak cars did get the 26" radiator, but not necessarily the 054 3-core variety.   4.10 Dana cars (both auto and 4-speed) got the 054 MaxCool radiator IIRC.   I'm not sure whether 3.91 geared cars got a 2-core or 3-core radiator, quite honestly.

A 22" radiator would be the base radiator offering on 440/auto/nonA-C/3.23(or numerically lower geared) cars, and 383/non-AC/3.23-or-lower cars that did not have the trailer tow package.   Adding A/C, Trailer Tow, or any of the "Performance Axle Packages" or "TrackPak" variants would bump the car up at least to a 2-core 26" radiator.   Someone could also come along and spec out the MaxCool (N51) package anyway.

Nothing is ever simple with MaMopar, is it?

I'd like to know how long and how many engineers it took to come up with those rules.  Only a small part of the hidden development costs.
