my 68 383 roadrunner had  point ignition system  I had a harness and complete ignition system removed from a 77 fury with a 318. I gutted the 318 dist and installed the reluctor and pickup in the 383 point dist. Then I spliced the 383 point RR harness with the 77 fury elect harness. OK now for th problem it runs kinda but it doesn't run very good it starts and idles but back fires over 2k and the ballast resister gets flaming hot in seconds. I have done this swap before but I lost my schematics so I tyred to do it from memory oh yeh I also changed alt and regulator to the 77 duel field any and all info would be cool if you can post a detail schematic for ny 68 and the 77 now that would be great great website by the way thanks dc,com Well I fund the problem and sure enough I put the reluctore on backwards on I think I did have a look at the pic

Did you fit the roll pin in the reluctor in the correct position. There's two slots, one for small blocks (clockwise rotation), and one for big blocks (anti-clockwise rotation)?

Here ya go. Also make sure the 2 wires to the dist. are correct. If reversed, it'll run like sh*t.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.

boy thanks for the info I dont know on the reluctor I think I did it wrong ie small block slot thanks for the help

GreenMachine

On a big block the pin goes in on the opposite side of the arrow.
If it ain't broke, fix it 'till it is.

:2thumbs:yep changed position of reluctor now it is running alot better thanks but my ballast rsistor is still getting real hot how hot does yours get  :scratchchin:

Mine used to be hot enough that you couldn't touch it, I don't know if that was right or wrong but that is what is was.  I have an MSD now so that problem has been solved.
