We are talking big block mopars here,of course...I am looking into this and thought I would get ask around. :scratchchin:

Rolling_Thunder

well I have "rebuilt" and engine for right around $400     but that was just bearings, rings, cam, timing chain, and freeze plugs...    that in my opinion is not a rebuild...         i think you need to be a little more specific
1968 Dodge Charger - 6.1L Hemi / 6-speed / 3.55 Sure Grip

2013 Dodge Challenger R/T - 5.7L Hemi / 6-speed / 3.73 Limited Slip

1964 Dodge Polara 500 - 440 / 4-speed / 3.91 Sure Grip

1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye - 340 / A-518 / 3.23 Sure Grip

CB

I think it depends how far they need to go.
when I was asking around for a rebuild on a budget I got some quotes going from +-$3500 to $4500
thats machine work, new internals, heads and build up from oil pan to carb, turn key.
I am sorry but those prices were for my 340 small block though... :scratchchin:

Plus machine work which can easily hit $500 without getting into the heads.

If you can get it done for less than two grand, you're cutting a lot of corners. Doesn't mean the motor won't run fine, but you're rolling the dice.

Not necessarily cutting corners if you can do most of the work yourself.....alot of guys will replace stuff that doesn't really need replaced.
@ $1500 TOTAL into my 440.....that was 8+ years ago. Plenty of HARD running since....including spray... :icon_smile_big:

I did a 283 about 4 years ago. Block was bored, heads done etc. Master rebuild kit. Engine came back ready to assemble.  I had like 1200 in it but I built it myself. Of course Chevys are cheaper to do though.

I've been building engines since the early 70's, so my answer to that would not be something to base a comparison on.  I remember getting cranks ground for $18, I've had blocks bored for $3 a hole and line boring cost 12 bucks. Rebuild kits would run anywhere from $52 to $80 depending on what it was and if anything was under or oversized might cost an additional 4 or 5 dollars, and that would include a high volume oil pump along with all the goodies.

I would call that an "overhaul". Add to that some head work where only the necessary valves and guides are replaced with the original springs shimmed to spec and you have a "complete overhaul".
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

ACUDANUT

I just found out from the machine shop that my heads alone are going to me cost around 400.00  ouch..

Is that with hardened seats and new valves?

Just new valves, guides. I don't run my cars enough to put harden valve seats in.  BTW how much extra for those I wonder.

I am not sure but a machinest told me on some really old heads the heat cycles are enough to harden them over time and if your not torturing them they will be fine. I was told a couple years ago like a couple hunderd more per set of heads.

I do add lead substitute about 50% of the time.  I too, believe that older heads over time, have semi-harden valve seats.

nope. It seems that once you deviate from a stock rebuild, it gets expensive fast. One consolation is that the shop doing the block is 'legendary for quality" and so on, and they are willing to 'gauratnee' the build, so thats something at least. I also went with a TTI headers and exhaust, that was a lot, but again, suppossed to be tits. guess we will see real soon on that.
