Well now that summer is almost over I decided to start restoring my 73. Since its all numbers matching I kind a want to build it the way it left the assembly line, but then again I'd like to modify it a bit. I was wondering what you guys might think :shruggy:. Its a factory triple black car 318. I have a 400 out of another 73 to make her a big block but then I'd be taking away the origianality of it. So what you think asw Im kinda stuck on a dis. :rotz:

Build the 400 up or make it a stroker.  Keep the 318 on the side because it's the original. Put it back to stock colors and drive the wheels off of it  :Twocents:  It isn't a bad looking car as it sits, but triple black would be nice as well.  For the cliche part of the post: it's your car, do what you want.  When I'm finished with my motor (also a 400) and get it running, I'll hopefully have some numbers to update the build combo that I picked, it may be an option for you.

Nice cars!

What's the rest of the drive train like?

Would you have to change/upgrade anything else to back up the 400?

If not, I'd go with what 73 said above. Otherwise, I, personally, would take it back to as original as possible - but that's me.

A lot of people may say that a 318 3rd gen isn't a big deal so go ahead and modify, but I figure if everyone is doing that, there's less and less original 318 3rd gens out there.
That still may not mean much to most folks today, but who knows in the future, right? And I'm not necessarily talking about investment value here. I'm talking about "interesting."
Eventually, the though could be: "Everyone swapped out the 'teen for a big block back in the day (and still), it's cool to see one that didn't get changed out."

I think you can still have fun with a 318.
Heck I wish I still had my /6 3rd gen.

I have all the drive line out of the 73 BB, so I don't think it would be to bad as to swap them. But you are right a lot of people don't care as much for a 318. All my friends tell me to BB it but at the same time I think it would be cool to have a 3rd Gen as it would of looked brand new. The car runs awesome down the road and for a 318 with just headers and short glass packs it sounds really good  :yesnod:. Wasn't there only like 25 more hp on the BB cars then the SB cars in 73?

I say keep the 318 dude...  gas is expensive and if you want to drive a BB just hop in the 71.   :2thumbs:

Oh yeah and im sending you a PM about something too.

NMike

stroke the 400 to 496. and for the love of pete, get rid of the puke green.

TripleBlackGator

Go back to TripleBlack of course. Rebuild the 318 and keep it in it. Why does it have to be modified? I'll look a lot closer and longer at an original numbers matching car on the street or in a show field than a chromed out stroker with custom paint. My only allowance? Aftermarket wheels and tires. Just not Torq-Thrusts. (Done to death and a dime a dozen) STOCK! STOCK! STOCK!  :2thumbs:
Malicious, vindictive, spiteful, cynical, pessimistic, sarcastic, & antagonistic. And those are my good traits!

Charger1973

Oh yeah, I agree on the triple black too.

I definitely agree with you on the torq-trusts. I have a new set of craigers but the magnums will look sweet to. Thanks for your reply

I like it as it sits. Nothing wrong with putting in a big block and keeping the 318 to go back to original. If it's a daily driver I would keep the 318. Hey can yo take a photo of how your hood release cable mounts at the latch. I'm putting one in mine but don't have any of the fasteners.

I'd go with the 318 or another small block.  Like Charger1973 said, gas is expensive and if that is an issue, you'll be able to drive it more with the small block.  Also, it would be more affordable to  build the 318, and you don't have to modify any other part of the drivetrain for the 318.

If built right, 318s can be pretty mean  :Twocents:

I would ditch the 318 in favor of a warmed up 400. Stock 318`s in a 4000 lb car= SLOW.
I never get the gas mileage argument either. For me MPG is not a major consideration for a pleasure vehicle, only a daily driver.   If you want gas mileage buy an economy car/truck with a 4 cylinder.

If I had two cars built to run Id have trouble deciding which one to drive. Plus I would probably become biased and drive one more than another, which could lead to getting bored of one and selling it (which we all know is a "kick yourself later" waiting to happen). If was factory than it is in a whole other experience to drive and thus I could pick between the two depending on what I was in the mood for that day.  :Twocents:

I think since you've already got a big block car it might be kinda cool to leave the 318 in it. Throw some bolt on performance upgrades, intake, exhaust, carb, electronic ignition maybe some 3.23's and you've got yourself a good driver for nice days.

Little more progress today  :2thumbs:.
