Should have an HP stamp up top

G a '71?

The first photo shows the side of my engine block.   It is a basic 440.   It shows, and I know it is tough to read:

11.9.68 - the casting date.

2536430-9 - the casting #

The second photo shows the machined pad near the distributor at the front of the engine.   It reads:

E440+ - which means E=69 & 440 c.i.d., can't remember what the cross means but I think it is pretty standard.

2     25         P2 - which means 2/25 (February 25 assembly date) & P2 means premium fuel and the 2 most likely means second shift.

It is not an HP block.   If it were, it would have read:

2     25        HP

But this does not matter as I am assuming you plan on rebuilding the engine and the HP has no affect on the block, just the guts from the factory.

So, this block was cast on October 30, 69 and the casting # was 2536430-7.
It was assembled on November 12, I am guessing the second shift and the G-440 means it is a 440 c.i.d. and I am guessing here but the G in front of the 440 means it is for a '70.

I know you are in the Toronto area Pete, pick up a copy of the Tri-Ad, a local buy and sell type rag where every so often you will find a motor close to home or a parts / junker for $500.00.

I know a felow who bought a rusted out POS '69 New Yorker just for the block.  $500.00 CDN.

I thought F was a 70?

I put some ? in my post because, you are correct, F should = 70.   if my '69 is an E then F = 70   :shruggy:

I am looking at the casting date Pete provided - 10.30.69

G is the year code for '71, it's not unheard of to have the block casting number a year earlier than the assembly date (In this case November 12, 1970)
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

cudaken

90% sure the cross stands for Malties block. That was used to tell the people something in the block was over or under sizes. Could be anything from lifter bore to cylinder bore.
