Gas cap is on the cab behind driver door... the truck is sitting by the road at a trucking company, haven't asked about it... tags expired 5/07. Was curious as to the engine in it... might talk to 'em later.  It is an automatic.

Actually, I'd like to have it so I probably shouldn't go ask about it... just what I need, another Mopar project 

as far as engine...it is most likely a 318 or a 360  could be a mighty slant six...or could even be a 400 or 440 but its not to probable...

1972 was the first year for this style cab. The 1971 style was the Sweptline style (like the Dude).
In 1972, the tank was behind the seat - just like 1971.
However, in 1973 the tank was positioned OUTSIDE of the cab, down to inside the frame rail, primarily for safety reasons.

Not true in all cases. My 76 Power wagon 4x4 shortbed had the tank in the cab. Not hard to remember, I can STILL smell the %$#@ing fuel.

Id'ing the year for this cab style by the grille is loser. Not hard or uncommon to be changed.

A quick look for big block oil filter will get you the small/big block answer in a hurry. With a 4x4, you wont even get your knees dirty.

This one is a 74. I can just feeeeeel it.

That being said - as you absolutely certain the cab wasn't changed at some time?

I too have a 75 and it is the same grill.I also have a 77 d200 thats a camper special model that has the tank in the cab.also one under the bed.

My  factory service manual states that the  belly tank  on conventional cabs is an auxiliary tank.  The D100 and D200 club cab trucks the belly tank was the standard tank with no in cab behind the seat tank.

On the conventional cabs  the standard tank was the tank inside the cab.  I know this is correct thru 1976 year trucks.

Interesting about the cab mounted tanks. I thought those were done after '74. My '76 club cab has two factory frame mounted tanks and I junked out a '75 with a frame mounted tank. All the other trucks I have owned were '77 or later and had frame mounted tanks.

My dad has a '73 with the cab tank and we have a '75 W300 fire truck with a tank in the cab. If figured it was just a leftover chassis used by the company that built the truck. Come to think of it the 4wd does have the full time 203 transfer case though. I think 1974 still had the divorced transfer cases. Also, the dash style changed somewhere around 1974 also.

Where was your 2nd tank on the club cab? Was it back where the spare tire was?
I think by 77 the cab tanks were gone. Havent ever seen a 77+ with a cab tank.
