The 400 has more in common with the 383 motor than a 440. 

The 400 is basically a 383 longblock with the cylinders bored out a little bit larger.  There's a compression loss and a ton of smog crap on the stock 400, but nothing that won't be swapped out during a basic rebuild.  If you wanna build a hot motor, it's pretty much as usable as a 383/440 Magnum.

Many use the 400 for stroker motors since they have a larger bore than a 440 and can be built with lighter internals due to the lower deck height.  Oh wait.  They're boat anchor smog motors.  Let me take it off your hands for you.
