Anyone else working for companies that have slow business right now? Are you worried about getting laid off, what will you be doing if you do get laid off. We're going to be doing work-share where everyone will be working only 20hr weeks and rest will be paid by unemployment. This is pretty bad time for this crap, especially when holidays are coming up soon.

My dad says the same thing. He is a operator at a local Coal Power Plant. For those of you who know anything about power plants, it was the first Nuclear to Coal Conversion in the world.

I don't worry nearly as much about a layoff as I do union radicals driving the company out of town.  Strike deadline is next summer and I'm putting away money because the idiots who allegedly speak on my behalf seem hell bent to close the place.

The last place I worked at, for almost 10 years, was a problem when the economy took a dump. Where I am right now, it's the opposite. I was at a civil engineering firm that had an incompetent owner who sold it to another incompetent owner that finally put it under when the economy slowed. Now, I'm an estimator for a site contractor that's been in business for roughly 85 years & run by the same family the whole time. (I've been here since 1996) If there's any good reason at all for a slow economy, it weeds out the dipshit contractors & consultants in a hurry. We're busier now than several years ago & have a few contracts that will keep us busy until at least the end of next year.

We're doing highway improvements for NYS, airport improvements at 2 airports, one of which is for the Port of Authority, more improvements to local roadways & culverts for one town, various work at West Point, & we're almost done with a brand new, private automotive race track in Monticello, NY that's now open. We're still bidding on other work that fits into our schedule, but we are able to be "pickier" about what we bid on. Private developments have slowed down quite a bit, but that's where I see the incompetents disappearing first. They can't get involved with the work that's going on because they've burned their bridges when the economy was better.

When the tech bubble of 2000 burst, I was affected and I vowed never to let that happen again.  So, I feel fortunate to have a gig in healthcare (never a shortage of sick people), in the public sector (company can't get bought/sold), with only two competitors (where we have 2/3 of the market) and huge barriers to new competitors entering the market.  It also doesn't hurt that the role I do is hard to replace with someone fresh outta college...

People are sick so business is good!~

Well, people will have to have power too, so being a Mechaincal Engineer at the same power plant my dad works at will be a solid job. College will be expensive though.

Silver, which body shop do you work at Spokane? You can pm if you chose to keep a low profile.
My shop is swapped w/work. I could work 7 days a week if I chose to, but no thanks. I have a life out side of work.

We have been very slow. I was laid off 3 weeks ago, and I was there for almost 10 years. Sucks, but I am hoping something turns up soon.

Really? The US unemployment rate hasn't gone any higher than 6.1% since April of '94 and Washington State is at 5.7% currently. :shruggy: What's the big deal? Do you guys have to work double shifts when it gets to 6% or more? This might have more to do with the poor efficiency of the workers in your office than the unemployment rate.

I hate to say it, but when i was in the Guard back in the early 80's I had a hell of time getting a decent job.
