Oil Set-up Question

I am currently scheme out the plans for a 400HP 318 engine build for my 72.  It's a big mark to hit but I'm following this (http://www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/mopar/0667em_mopar_318_engine/index.html) build and it should come out pretty sweet...anyways...in an effort to acquire this HP (and to keep the engine alive  ;D) I'm wondering what approach I should take for the oil system. In popular mechanics build they simply used a factory 5 qt oil pan w/ a stock volume pick up and oil pump along w/ a windage tray and a home made slosh baffle.
I'm trying to improve upon that  :D...so right now I'm trying to figure out how big of a pan I should get, if I should go w/ a hi-po oil pump & pick up...

Right now I figure a 5 qt should do it w/ lager-then-stock pick up & hi-po pump (meaning a hardened intermediate shaft) w/ a windage tray, lifter valley baffle and a slosh prevention baffle in the pan.

Is this overkill? Any suggestions?

Thanks alot :2thumbs:

That sounds like a good start but what is going to be the typical usage of the engine when done?  Redline?
As for Popular Mechanics going for a stock setup and low buck approach, I think the oil system is one area where it's a lot smarter to be better safe than sorry.  :icon_smile_wink:

no it'll just b a daily driver cruiser w/ the occasional 1/4 run and yes-my-muscle-is-faster-then-your-import run...but your right...rather be safe then sorry
