OK I got a 'puter question for you guys..

My Computer is about 2 years old and has been pretty much trouble free. It has a CDR and DVD player/CDR. Recently BOTH of em are "missing" to the system.

They don't show up in "My Computer" and they don't work at all - they DO have power to them and I can open and close them without any trouble.

Both disappeared at the same time.  There is a "fix" at Microsoft for this issue and mine even displays the same trouble codes that they specify, BUT the fix doesn't fix mine.

HELP!!!!  Anybody got any ideas besides a BFH!?!?!? (Big FREAKIN' Hammer!)  :smash: :smash:

Make sure the data cable is fully plugged onto the motherboard, or better yet, try a new one.

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.

I have actually unplugged and replugged the data cable. As far as the drive itself, if ONE had stopped working, I could figure on the drive. But BOTH at the same time, there is a problem elsewhere.

Thanks though.

But are they a pair of master/slave drives on the same cable?

Yeah they are. You thinking something happened to the cable? I do have a spare, maybe I will give that a shot! Can't hurt and doesn't take long.

Could be the secondary interface on the drive controller is disabled.

That can be done (and undone) in the system BIOS in most cases.

An easy way to check is to open up Device Manager and make sure all of the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers show up.

While you're there, you can delete all of them and then do a Scan for hardware changes to reload them.
This will fix a driver loading problem...

That was the second thing I tried, it will find the roms, but then it has a problem reinstalling them.

I'm not sure WHAT to do at this point! This is BIZARRE!!!!

First off did you get an error code? If it comes up as error code 39 or 37, then there aew filters turned o in the registry. I had a similar problem last week at work. Hope this helps. Dom

If that is the same "Fix" that is from Microsoft, then I have tried it and no go.
