   Hey Gang...

last night, 8:30 P.M. temp approx. 60 degrees, no wind, myself and a friend were cruising the '99 300 M along Golden Gate Ave. at 30 mph, three lanes one direction, west to east, perfectly smooth road, no traffic, when suddenly the windshield Pops, loudly, and shattering extensivly. (see pics)
I suspected at first a bullet had hit or grazed the window shattering it.
After traveling aother quarter of a mile a close examination under a street light revealed no bullet hole as i had expected to find.
I didn't find any evidence of impact of any object nor was I aware of any object of any kind at the moment of impact, simply a shattering from drivers to passenger side.

Any thoughts, possible explainations or similar experiances?..  :shruggy:

Auto glass does some weird things, happens quite a bit actually.  I remember as a kid we were driving along and the rear window of our station wagon just exploded for no reason.

i remember afew years ago when me and my buddy first got our drivers licenses, we were driving his moms almost new caddy and there was a bug on the windsheild...well i went to swipe it away and GRAZED the window with my fingers and it did almost the same thing...  we told her we hit bird...
Daddy ran whiskey in a big black dodge
bought it at an auction at the masons lodge,
Johnson County Sherriff painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside,
well him and my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound.....

:iagree:

That really looks like it originated from under the trim about half way up the pillar. I wonder if something got stuck under the trim (between glass and trim) and a well placed bump in the road gave it just the hit it needed on the edge of the glass.

Hey Brock. Depending on your insurance company, it most likely won't cost you a thing to have it replaced. Most insurances will send a company of your choice to your home or work and they will fix it on the spot. They will bring with them a couple of windshields in case they break one during install. I had a rock break my windshield on my Toyo P/U last year. Allstate covered it for free. No deductable and zero cost. I simply called the company of my choice. They came to my house and were done in under an hour. I signed the reciept and they sent the bill to Allstate.

Good luck....

That'll eliminate the inside glare inherent of 300's.  Stinkin' Chrysler product.   :RantExplode: ;)

We've had cranes do that.  Usually it was the lower cab that did it, get out of the cab and leave the heat on.  A few times like you, just driving down the road and BAM!  I remember one popping inside the shop too.  The Leibherr I was on windshield cost over $2200 and that was in '02 or so.

Definitely scare the bejeebus outta ya'.

At first glance it appears to have come from the A-pillar area (like bakerhillpins and Drache suggest) but I've never, ever, seen a crack spread like that.  It looks like IMPACT. Period. Did you have any previous windshield chips filled?  If so, it will weaken the area - - but then of course, you'd have to have impact at the exact same spot to cause this type of damage - - which is highly doubtful..... but could happen.  :scratchchin:

Actually, I like the ghost theory best  :D - - have you pissed off any dead people lately?  :shruggy:

definitely looks like the center up driver's side was the culprit.. maybe something was lodged in there as others have said.. bet a precious honda or toyota wouldn't have done that..    :nana:

I had a window shatter on me once... literally.
I was driving down the road during a thunderstorm when I saw the car in front me get hit by lightning... right dead center on the top of the cab! Holy crap... I don't think the guy even new it... he just kept driving like nothing had happened. I few moments later I hear what sounds like a rifle going off in my backseat, and glass is suddenly flying everywhere like it was fired out of a cannon. I hit the brakes and pull over to the side of the road. The inside of the car is covered in broken glass and the rear window is gone. I got out of the car and walked around the back to check the damage. The window is gone obviously, but the trim molding is also gone... well sort of... it's no longer around the window, it's in pieces and stuck to various parts of the car... quarter panel, roof, trunk, etc. I tried to pick up the pieces but they were stuck to the car... I couldn't pull them off, I couldn't pry them off, they were stuck there for good. They looked OK, but apparently they had been welded to the body by what must have been a lightning strike to the rear of the car. Well I'm standing out there in the pouring rain with no rear window, so I figured, the heck with the trim, I'll try to get it off later when I get home. I walked back to the front and open the drivers side door to get in, and then I hear what sounds like metal hitting the pavement behind me... I turned and looked, and there was all the trim laying on the ground... it just fell off.... Lightning does some weird stuff.

69charger2002

man that is freaky!! the only story i had was once when i first got into chargers.. had to be 97 or so. i had carefully removed a back glass from a parts car. i'm literally carrying it in my 2 hands.. and i got about 30 feet away fromthe car and it shattered into thousands of pieces right ther ein my hands. of course no gloves on! i didn't get a single scratch, not one shred of glass was left in my hand(no i didn't drop it lol). it was the weirdest thing ever. i was pickingg up glass for an hour afterwards.. maybe the sun hit it funny? i am sure i didn't bump anything... it was odd

Yup, thats what happened... the effects of the strike were still lingering in the metal of the body, but when I opened the door I probably shorted the field to ground.  :shruggy:

Tempered glass. Besides the fact that the tempering makes the faces of the glass much more impact resistant its shatters into lots of tiny pieces, which is actually MUCH safer than plate glass. Its used for lots of safety stuff. Ive had a sheet from one of my pinball machines blow up while I was holding it right in front of my face. It explodes within its plane, makes a bone numbing pop and shoots glass for easily 20' in both directions. Needless to say I changed my shorts. Tempered glass is most susceptible to detonation when it is impacted on its edges, and it doesn't take much to cause it to go. Never set tempered glass on concrete, they are arch enemies and it will almost pop.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempered_glass
"Tempered glass is strong, has enhanced thermal resistance, and breaks into small cuboid fragments rather than irregular shards of glass and therefore is less likely to cause injury."
