I am at lost with what to do about my Charger...UPDATE

If it's the front rails, don't worry about it.  Buy the caps, have somebody from here or Moparts weld 'em on for you, and get back to driving.  I don't think caps are available for the rear rails, so if those are bad, be prepared to start paying a fabricator to fix it. :D

My car has some wicked rust around the rear window, quarters and trunk extensions.  I don't care, it's getting fixed anyway.  You only live once, right?  I'd rather be happy and broke working on and fixing something I genuinely enjoy...aka my '68 Charger.  :icon_smile_cool:

Thank you so much PLUMBAD70...you know that is where I figured I would be just for the rails...the body is fine for now as well as the floor boards from what I have been told.   The only thing it really needs is the rails esp on the front end.   Okay that is a great starting point.   If they tell me that much for just the front rails and etc without the other things such as body panels and paint then I know to keep looking.

Drache-I PM you the first question and I was told the only thing the car would need is a new radiator as the one in it did not match the engine.   He said the car mech was very good and the body had a few bad spots that was filled in back by the wheelhouses, but the only thing it really needed was a new headliner...dash was cracked...and minor things like that.   He said he took it to shows, but usually trailered it.   Said when he bought it he had to put it (the engine) together.   The exhuast was new...hell he told me the brakes were good...they had to be one hundred percent replaced.   As far as leaks and etc...I know I will probably have to replace the gaskets here and there as I will be driving it more then usual, but he said it was not a project car and good to go.

Moparts...hehe...that is where I bought the car in the first place.  Found it there.  I would love to find someone on my area that could do that for me, but eh...anyone live in the Indianapolis area?  lol

I think I am just pissed off for I am tired of people at work and etc telling me that this car is junk.  And telling me how stupid I am and blah blah blah.  You are so right Blusmbl about living once.  With my health I have no idea of what each year will bring...hence why I want to do anything I can to save this car.  I plan to do most of it myself with the help of guys I know, but UGH I know no welders!  LOL!

Ok I'll tell you this that the car is not junk. Yes you overpaid just a little too much for it and yes you were sold a lemon by a guy who probably worked as a used car dealer. So sit down and start a list of the things that need to changed on this car to get it into a nice driving condition (what you want) and then price them all out.

Radiator
Brakes
Dash
Frame
Etc.

Now if the price to fis all of this is more than what you can or willing to spend then you have two options. Either parting out the to use the parts yourself on another or selling the thing whole. Selling it whole though would be hard especially if you are kinda like me and have a tendancy to tell the truth when selling vehicles. The only way you'll get all your money back out it by selling it though is keeping your mouth shut about the frame rust and ebaying it.

Now, there are a couple people who live in the Indianapolis area I believe who might be able to help you with any welding that might need to be done. If not then what you do is throw the car onto a trailer, buy a case of beer, and tow the car to someone from this board who might be able to help you weld it when you have some vacation time.

I had the same problem with my 72 Charger. Rust was well hidden, and some places you couldn't see it or the poor repair work until you removed pieces of the car. This happens a lot more than you think. It's just that 90% of people who get into a situation like this are embarrassed to admit that they got the short end of the stick on the deal. I know that when I got my 72 home, stripped it down, brought it over to the bodyshop we looked it all over and my friend asked "how much you pay for this car?". 2k I told him. He replied "I think you paid 2k too much for this turd" .

I have the brakes and U Joints done already-cost me almost a grand.

And I am way too honest to even sell this car on ebay knowing the rust problem.   Now the guy sent me a grand back so tech I paid a grand less then what I sent to you.

The frame, new oil pan, and the radiator recored is the main thing right now.   Oil pan and radiator is not bad...from what I have been told...the frame is the main thing.   But if it is close to what PLUMBAD is paying then I can deal with that.   CC company will love me, but hopefully I will have that paid off asap.

The guy said he worked in the automotive in a factory I think working on engines?   He was a factory worker.   And hey!   Anyone from INDY Want to help this girl out?   I will bring a couple cases of beer or more lol.

And NH I wish all I paid on this car was two grand lol.  Yeah it is embarassing and it is taking all I have in me not to let those who run moparts.com know about this as he sells cars on there.  But I am one also who trys to believe in the good of people and in case there is a chance he may honestly not have known about this...you know?

But yeppers I am a girl.  And I take applications any day for single guys who love Chargers and know how to weld...lol

1st question I have not seen in any of the post what year car this is. Also I would tell you to sign up at the local Collage for a auto repair class. If you are going to be in this hobby you will need it ( it will save you alot of money). U-joints & brake job are very easy at home jobs.

Also I own 2 Chargers & I am a Millwright by trade at a Mopar plant ( Millwright = welder & metal fabracater). If that is not enuf I spent years working as a auto tech. So what line do I get in?

SeattleCharger

Hey DarkAngel, that is a really cool looking car, hope it works out for you to fix it up and keep it.
This is a really interesting thread, have learned a bunch.  Makes me wonder about my frame.  Probably a candidate for that problem.

Plum70, my car needs at least all that you mentioned, sounds like you got a great deal from what I heard from the guy I bought my car from.

Why would you want anything else?Ā  Just give me a Charger and I'll be happy.

Chargerguy74

Drache, I don't think it is possible for a person to over pay on their true dream car.

Dark Angel, one of my cars has sat on the ground for 20 years, you can imagine how it rotted, but I still can't wait to see it all fixed. After seeing all the before/after pics at car shows, anything is possible. BTW, I see you didn't post your pic yet ;)

You hit the nail right on the head!  Before I read your post Troy I was laughing at Silver and how his attitude and tune changed when he found out he was a she!

DarkAngel- Auto Rust Technicians in Rhode Island makes frame repair kits for front and rear, in various levels of assembly to replace rusted components, depending on how bad it is. You could get the parts from them; someone would still have to weld them in for you, but it would give you a safe drivable car again. Their website is:

http://www.autorust.com/

I've seen some of their work; Jerry, the owner, is an enthusiast himself, and designed a lot of the components in his repair kits to make his own '70 Charger roadworthy again. And he drives the he** out of it! Give them a try before you throw in the towel on yours.

Ok...so I guess I will hop in the Single guys with Chargers line since I only have limited welding experience. But I am excellent when it comes to providing moral support :icon_smile_big:

Teew is right. Auto Rust Technologies makes a safety cap for just about every frame component. They are well made pieces too. I bought a rear frame rail for my 69 that I use to have. They are good folks too. Speaking of good folks to deal with. It's a bit off subject but Todd Marsh at Marsh performance is a great guy to deal with. Just needed to say that. :icon_smile_big:

You're right of course that how can you put a price on a dream? Hell I haven't and there have been times when I was eating KD. What I meant though is that she paid the price for a fully restored car, not one the needed a bunch of work. I would hate to save up a bunch of money to buy a dream that I thought would send me to the moon and only find out that I get into orbit and the rest is up to me to pay for.

But like I told her, there are a bunch of guys her that can totally help her and/or give her the advice she needs to move on and get her dream to the moon.
