I got a 69 440 C.I., Im trying to intall a starter from a 1996 3.9L Dakota. I was told this should fit. While mounting I can get the bottom hole in the starter lined up and bolted but the top hole is approximately 1/4 inch off. I applied pressure, lightly tapped and pryed, turned flywheel with no results. What am I missing? thanks in advance :brickwall:

Sometimes you have to grind off the casting flash on the block itself to get the starter to fit correctly....I had to do this on mine

OK, so I grind on the block and get it to mount in and it appearres the positive cabel stud coming from the starter is touching the block ( right at the frost plug lip) and it looks as if one side of the starter is touching the block and the other side is touching the header.  Is there something Im missing here or are they all like this. It would seem to me if I hook it up like this that I'll be under there replacing it again shortly due to the starter burning up. This starter is from a 1996 Dakota 3.9L.    any suggestions or advice? :brickwall: :shruggy:

terrible one

Is the stater you have one with the plastic black piece on it? If so, you need to remove it, then you're set.

oldschool

where the wires go,you need to remove the black plastic adaptor.i have 4 of theese on my cars,i love them.

Is the 3.9 starter the same as the 5.2/5.9 starter?  If not, there's you're problem. But if it is the same, then the fixes discussed should work.

OK, so Im still fighting with this starter fit issue, I understand some exhaust modification may be needed but what headers are you guys using with this starter?? I am using Headman headers and the starter is up against one of the runner tubes and the header wont seat perfect causing line up issues with my straight pipe at collector flange.  Give me some options such as going with a actual mini starter or different name brand header or maybe even the factory (big) starter that has more torque. The whole reason I tried the small starter because I got my timing right where I want it and the car doesnt like turning over when hot. Gimme your opinions please thank you.

I would have backed the timing down a little so the car would turn over when hot.
