Yeah, HLPAG is pretty much "a jolly f*cking romp through Dante's Inferno," to quote Sylvester Stallone about his marriage to Brigitte Neilsen.

You're not the only one amazed that HLPAG is still in business.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

For a GL, you really just need a decent '68/69 car more than anything else.   The GL conversion, even a TV-prop-accurate one, isn't much more than a repaint & some bolt-ons.  90% of the work of creating a replica is getting a decent Charger underneath that paint.  (Didja know it was actually a CORVETTE orange shade for many years on the TV series?)

The TV crew tore through so many prop-cars so fast . . . they quickly learned not to invest too much painstaking effort into any one single GL.  They had the GL-building & repairing process down to a fairly quick & dirty science.  It's night & day compared to the lovingly-done restorations a Dodge Charger gets now.

The pushbars are being reproduced by several sources.

The wheels are traded on Ebay, and American Racing itself made a batch of similar new ones recently.

The cage setup can be bolted in pretty easily.

You will need to decide a lot of things about what kind of GL you're building.  They were always orange '68/69 cars, but damn near EVERYTHING else about the car was varied at some point.  Even little stuff you wouldn't think would ever need to be changed, like the CB antenna on trunklid for example.

We're talking about dozens of Chargers being used each season, built by a total of 5 different builders, in two different states, over the course of 7 years.  And that's just the original TV series.

Put it this way.

You go buy a rusty Charger... Get sand paper and sand the car down (rust still there but smooth now). Buy  primer and paint and paint it... then... take photos of the car with the title "fully restored" and then in photoshop, use the smudge tool to get rid of the obvious rust spots.... send the pictures away, milion, doesnt matter, whatever makes sure u get the sale. Sell the car and u made your money. If you got a concscience u wont be sleeping at night (so it takes a total &^@&*@^*& to do it who has no conscience) and then, when the new owner gets it, sad wife (if married) sad owner, sad kids (if any) and the bank goes down there throat to pay a car off that they wish they now didnt have. On their misfortune and hell of a life to live now till its sorted out, you as the dickhead selling it are enjoying life. = HL-FAG

And as for them escaping justice, the rumors are that they are about to get thrown off that train.  :shruggy:

I'm not holding my breath though.

There has been rumars of Hahns going to jail for well over 5 years now.  I don't know how they do it but they always seem to escape justice.  I have never herd a single buyer happy after a purchase or a happy ending from someone trying to make it right.

Hey guys, thanks again for all of the honest replies.. I do believe you've saved me a major headache. I can't let the wife know she's done TOO good here -- It'll go right to her head  :yesnod:

Anyways, here are my babies...

2002 Z06 and my 06 F350 SuperDuty parked outside my summer place:

At this past weekend's car show (check out the emblems on the truck)

Ok, enough of that.. I can feel the diehard Mopar people twisting around in discomfort right now, so I won't put you through any more..

jb666

One funny note is that my Z06 came Silver from the factory.. So I had it stripped to the frame and painted Electron Blue (with some added Pearls). It's an amazing paint job..

In talking to hans he's mentions that the General will look just as nice.

Do you think HLPAG goes through their cars like this?

those guys don't have the skills of doing a resto. they are specialised in misleading or ripping off honest potential buyers.

HLPAG wouldn't go through a car that nicely.

But they might very well start with a car that ripped apart.

Blown70

They would when the car is stripped down.... put chicken wire on it with plenty of bondo and smooth that over.....   If that is what you mean by go over it..... like that.... :shruggy:

I was just getting SO tired of being jerked around by EBay sellers that I thought it was "safe" to go with a shop like this....

This is the main reason why they are still in business after taking so many for so much.  Alot of people just starting into the Charger or GL hobby go to them because they seem to be the easy way out (much easier than finding (and waiting) for a good deal on ebay).  Unfortunately, as in real life, if the deal seems too good to be true, it usually is.  The best way to get one is to become informed on them first before you make a quick purchase that you regret later......

BTW, there are a few Vette owners on here, but they usually keep that low key due to it being a Mopar site.  I happen to be slowly working on a very rough 70 Stingray project (Balwin-Motion clone) myself.....

Thanks!! I sure hope that's the case.. I'd rather buy from a trusted forum member then anyone else!!

If you know of anyone here selling a GL or a clean '69 Charger, please send them my way.. I'm not opposed to tearing a Charger down for paint, but I want to make sure it's a solid foundation before anything else.......

Yep, special emblems!!

666 has always been my number.. I've been using it for 25 years in various ways.. I'll let you in on a secret -- It's the street # of the house I grew up in!!

Now I just do it because it's stuck with me for so many years.. It's how people at all the local shows know me.. Those damn emblems on my 350 have gotten more attention then anything else I've done (except the Amtrak horns!!)
