RT/SE

Hey everyone,

The resto of my 69 RT/SE has officially started.  Fellow member 69 OUR/TEA will be doing the honors on the paint and bodywork for the car.  I spent quite a bit a time over the last few years stripping the car to get it ready for the restoration.  My car was very heavily undercoated from the factory.  In addition to the undercoating, the prior owner of my car decided to put a thick gooky layer of some type of roofing tar over the factory undercoating in some areas.  He also used expansion foam on some other areas of the car.  He told me that the foam was used by road racers to stiffen up a car.  Well, it took me countless hours to get all the undercoating, tar and foam scrapped off the car.  Let me tell you - heat guns and putty scrapers work miracles!!!!

I sent my car off to American Dry Stripping in Milford, CT to have it blasted.  All the body panels were done with a plastic media at low pressure to prevent damage to the panels.  Other areas were done with different media to get things nice and cleaned up.  Just wanted to share some before photos and some pics of the car when it came back from getting media blasted.  I'm very happy with the results.  More pics will follow as the resto moves forward.

RT/SE

Not firetrucking kidding!!!!!!  The car is the most solid mopar I've ever owned.  When I first inspected the car, I was absolutely floored.  The prior owner allowed me to inspect the car even thoough he was on the fence about selling.  I'm jumped at this car when he finally decided to sell.

And get real, I tought my body shell was good with just a shot trunkpan but damn at first I tought your pictures were taken after replacing the usual sheetmetal..... but they're not  :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o
Hang on to that car real good man (Let your wife go before that car ever does  :D)
Greetings from Belgium, the beer country

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

69_500

That car is super solid. I would have figured it would have required at least some of the typical sheetmetal replaced, but man that thing is solid.

hemi68charger

Wow........ What a car.......... Wonderful the car is the way it is............ I'm guessing you're not doing anything with the rear valance?..............

Yes, it is the original trunk floor.

wow

finding ANT 2nd gen charger without the center pan rotted is a chore(never mind a r/t SE) Congrats

Leads to my next question is it originally a california or arizona car?

Back N Black

WOW! Very nice. I guess all the extra roofing tar really worked.  :2thumbs:

69 OUR/TEA

Hey gang,
this car was definitely a super find for Phil, the word solid is an understatement....a bodymans dream!!!! I started on the panels a little over a month ago and have been stripping them with chemical stripper as most of them were still orig paint(came off real easy).Beautiful panels with just your typical small dings, ripples, etc, nothing major. As of now I have finished the hood, trunk, front valance, inside and out.Drivers door outside is done, pass door and pass fender very soon for primer, drivers fender stripped and ready to fix a couple small dings then will be primed.I have been using omni epoxy, which is from PPG ,and PPG NCP271 for my top primer. For a primer it lays out super smooth, which means you won't have to kill yourself sanding it,drys with a nice sheen, so helps in seeing the panels, body lines ,etc. All that and it sprays  great out of my Devibiss GTI ,(which we all know is a finish gun),with a 1.5 tip. Here are some progress pics to go along with the thread.........

69 OUR/TEA

some more....

What body work, so clean it dont need any body work. Yeah, I'd guess your gun should work fine with that thin primer since the Tech sheet recommendes using a 1.4-1.6 tip. Not sure I'd want to try spraying K-38 with that gun though :scratchchin: LEON.

RT/SE

Troy - 69 Our/Tea will work his mojo on the rear valence just like the other panels in preparation for the paintwork.  Fortunately, everything is solid back there.

charger fan 4ev - Car is not from out west.  Believe it or not - car is originally from New Hampshire.  I bought the car in 2002 from the second owner.  He bought the car in 1976 from the original owner.  Car has always been garaged its entire life.

Actually, sprayed a few gallons of K38 with this gun, just like NCP better.NCP thin?,when they speak of 2-4 coats and after sanding having 2.0-6.0 mills, seems like it has enough build to me.Anyway, like you said before everybody has their own way of doing things, products they prefer, what matters is the outcome, and if your jobs are coming out fine, than I geuss you must be doing something right.Take care

hemi-hampton

Your right there, just do what works for you & what you feel comfortable with, I have no problem with that. LEON.

I thought SE cars came with A/C and with A/C you couldn't get a 4 gear?  It had to be Automatic Tranny..?  :shruggy:
