Scat Pack Bee Question...

At Carlisle, I picked up one of the last remaining lighted Scat Pack Bee signs that were being reproduced.  There's a long story about why they're not going to be made anymore, and that's not the point.

I mounted the sign today in the shop, but I'm thinking that it looks a little too "flat", or nose-down.  I'm going to have to remount the sign anyway to move it over a little to the left anyway, so I wanted to get some input on what "angle" the Bee should be placed at on the wall.  Some of the old brochures & magazines/advertisements I have stacked around show the Bee, but it is a different drawing and I can't tell how they compare to the lighted sign.

Any thoughts on how it should be mounted?  Oh, and here's some pics...

dodgecharger-fan

I think it should be mounted on my wall instead of yours....

but, if you're not buying in to that line of thinking, there was a post - on here I'm pretty sure - that showed all the different "flavours" of the bee.

I know what you're thinking - it should be a little more heads up. That's the one that most people know.

However, I think this one is correct as well. It's just a different version of the bee.

I thought the old bee had a blower on his back? :-\

and when I say "correct" I'm really only talking about the angle - I couldn't say anything about every last little detail..

This was literally the last one they had for sale.  There was one other in the trailer that had not yet been picked up, but the guy was a friend of theirs and they were holding it for him (he was supposed to have been there by the time I arrived).  Their license to reproduce these with Chrysler was set to expire in about a week, and they have decided not to make any more.  So, what they had in their trailer is it...

Troy and I sauntered by their booth on Friday, and I checked them out when they still had several left.  When I went back to their trailer the next day, they were all buttoned up and had a phone number to call if you had purchased a sign and needed to pick one up.  I decided to give the guy a call anyway, figuring that maybe someone would renig and not come pick theirs up and/or pay.  Sure 'nuff, someone did not come back by and since I was the first guy to call them about any extras, I was told to show up at a particular time.  When I showed up, there were three other guys standing by the trailer just in case I didn't show up either.   :o  They had already sold all the really nice ones, and the only one they had left had a few broken pop rivets, some very small splits in the edge of the plastic and was missing the back cover (although they had a cover that they sent me later).  So, they gave me a heck of a deal, and it was the last one to boot.  I was definitely :boogie:

We added a bunch more pop rivets so it's a lot stiffer than it was before, and used some black magic marker to hide the split plastic as much as possible.  To be honest, the two splits are impossible to see unless you know where to look, so this one is as good or better than any of the others now.

I think I would have the helmet band close to level.
Years ago(5-6-yrs) I got a different repo sign.

That's a great looking sign, Brian.  I wonder how many variations they made?

Thanks for the input everyone.  I think I'll leave it pretty much at the same angle relative to the floor level, but my OCD will probably have me moving it about 6 inches over to the left.  Measure twice, install once...   :brickwall:

I have always been a HUGE fan of the SUPER BEE & collect tons-o-crap with the Scat Pack/bee logo on it. there were allot of variations, but I am particular to the crouched down, diggin' in look of the one on my hood.

I like the way your sign sits & wouldn't wouldn't try to "fix" it.   :Twocents:

Gene, I was just comparing your sign with the lights. That must be a huge sign. The one I got is only about two and half feet across.
Any plans for other memorabilia to line the walls?

Old Moparz

Gene, I'd be more concerned with what the heater on the wall directly below it might do to the plastic.   :Twocents:

(It is a heater, right?)

Thanks for the feedback, and confirmation with the hood decal.  I kinda think you are on to something with the "diggin" look, which goes along with what Brian said about the headband.

Coming soon to a MCG article near you...   :P

Serious question here - what's that 'Bee drawing/version from?  Looks familiar, but that might just be Halfzeimers kicking in.

This one's about 4'-9" across by 2'-9" high or so.  I have a few other things for the walls, but will continue to add as the opportunity arises.  I picked up a Bell racing helmet & visor from the '60s at Carlisle also - it was Hemi Orange, of course!  Grabbed a few barstools for Bench Racing sessions... (see pic below)  What I need to do is give Mike (6pkrunner) a jingle to get a few more things for the walls.  I have a ton of resource material and some memorabilia, but another Steven Juliano I'll never be.

Yup, it's one of those heat/cool units from a motel.  A buddy of mine that owns an HVAC company had a couple extra units from a replacement job they had done that were in good shape and just a few years old.  He had held onto them for a while thinking that he'd find a place to put 'em, but they were just taking up space in his shop.  The diffuser puts the air out towards the room rather than straight up, but I suppose it could blow some heat towards the light itself.

Last winter, I didn't turn the heat on once in there to be honest.  The nice thing about the over-insulated room I built (it's totally contained within my already-insulated/heated shop building) is that it doesn't really need heating or cooling.  I do run a dehumidifier -- this is Missouri after all...  :brickwall:  In the summer, it's probably no more than 80 degrees in there, and in the winter it probably stays 65 without running anything at all.  It's just nice to have the unit if it's needed.

The plastic is probably in danger more from the internal light itself.  The original signs were lit by incandescent bulbs, and the vast majority of the plastic housings were discolored after just a short time in service.  The repops use two fluorescent strip fixtures instead, so the heat of the lamp next to the plastic is much less.  The ballast, however, does put off a fair amount of heat.  Over time, that could still discolor or warp the plastic.  Hopefully it won't happen for a while if at all, and that's also why I won't end up leaving the light on 24/7.

Some how I missed this thread. The Bee looks very nice up on the wall there Gene. I would have figured it would have went on another wall though, considering that wall will be in the middle of the two cars, and you'll be looking at a HEMI Charger, and a Daytona, with a huge BEE looking over them.

Did you wind up with any of the metal signs too of the cut away engine? I know you were thinking of one of those too when you went to pick out the stools.

Hey, Bo & Luke didn't need a helmet so I don't need one for jumps either.

Side note:  One of the painters from work is still lobbying to slide across my hood a la Tom Wopat.  I told him if he did so he should do two things:

> Keep running
> Pick up enough speed to outrun shotgun pellets

Thanks Danny.  I did get the hemi cutaway sign from MCG also, but haven't hung it up in the room yet.  It's still leaning against the wall in my office, but one of these days...

It looked to me like the best location for the lighted sign was between the doors.  The left sidewall has cabinets & a low-hanging light, and the other sidewall isn't visible too much through the doors.  That right sidewall was also where I planned to hang the cutaway sign and posters from Mike.  If there was another type of repro lighted/plastic sign available (like UFO's), it might be cool to get one to go behind each car - but then that would mess up the sillhouette look I was going for.  Seeing as how we cut in an electrical outlet specifically for this light, I suspect this one will stay right where it's at...

69_500

Oh I have an idea Gene. Try to find another of the smaller scat pack signs, and hand them both on the ceiling over the top of each car, then turn them on and they can still give that silhouette look that you had going before. Also I know you wouldn't have to cut in any additional outlets, as I recall seeing a few outlets in the ceiling already when I was there. I think you said they were going to be for trickle chargers right.  :nana:

Oh, and I'd pay some decent amount of money to be present to video tape the "painter" when he does his attempt at a hood slide. He could get more distance on the slide if he waited until the Daytona was done. Could be like a whole gymnastic routine though. Starting with a parallel bar event on the rear wing, with a triple back flip over the roof, to a hood slide over the hood to the nose cone. As long as he sticks the landing I don't see how you could be upset.  ;)

Sorry couldn't resist being the wise guy that my wife constantly refers to me as.
