would too much advance or too little advance cause the engine to run a little hot?  is there anything else i should check?  when i say a little hot i mean the gauge rises after i run the engine a little harder and then it backs down a when i'm just cruisin... its a 318 with a holley 4 barrel and a mopar purple cam.. thanks guys

That happens on every engine.
depends what you mean by "too hot"
perhaps your gauge is off, or not, but need a temperature example.

One other suggestion.  I had a heating problem much like yours.  Turns out the sending unit was not a mopar unit, but an aftermarket unit.  Someone on this board suggested I change it.   I found an OEM and it showed a BIG difference.  Get an accurate temperature reading, then swap out the sending unit with a mopar, see if they don't show differently.  Just a thought.
