Made myself a little discovery today. Really, I'm not sure if anyone loves seeing these pictures as much as I do, but I figured I would share anyways.

Here we have a 1971 slant 6 Challenger (C in VIN). How rare is that exactly? Believe me, I know that that does not make it desireable, just curious. The guy was asking $1200 for it, but it was definitely a negotiable price. How is that for this one do you guys think? The rust is funny to me, as the trunk pan, frame, quarters, etc. were SO SOLID yet the one floor pan was definitely in trouble. I talked to the guy and let him know I was just there to shoot the shit and definitely couldn't buy the car, but if anyone is seriously interested in this one PM me and I can give you some information. . . located around Ruston, LA.

Also on the property was a 1969 Dart 340 with a full cage and in really nice shape, just engineless. Also there was a '70 Dart in the trailer in full racing attire, but I'm not sharing pictures of these simply because I wouldn't want people displaying property of mine that I wasn't trying to sell.

Nice find man. I also came across a couple '70 challengers a few days ago. The green one was a C code car as well.

Note the pop-rivet on the dash VIN. Check the body numbers, there may be more than one reason it is for sale cheap.

Yeah, First thing I noticed was that phoney pop rivet. Obviously removed & replaced at one time. BUT, I doubt anybody would want to change the car to a 6cyl if it original was not :shruggy: LEON.

I'm not sure why someone would fake a rusty 6 cyl. unless it was stolen at one time. For $1200, I'd buy it if the car was closer.

I gotta get on the O-YA for $1200 bandwagon. But cost to get it home would kill me!

I see the $1200.00 potential  :yesnod:

71ChallengeHer

If the grille is in good shape , it's prolly worth more than $1200.  :Twocents:

TUFCAT

I agree!  For 12 small, that's the deal of the century.  :yesnod:

The floor boards on the passenger often rusted out if the heater core went bad and was left to leak on the floor and just left there ubder the rug.  The rest of the car mabe solid for just that reason.

That was my first thought.  I remember when the grille alone was worth 1,200.00
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

TheAutoArchaeologist

Here's a few things I've noticed....

The grille is a 71.. the headlight bezels are 70.

Has a 70 shifter but a 71-74 console.

8 3/4 rear was not available with the /6.

Vin tag rivets as stated before.

I believe that recessed gauge cluster housing was a 70 only piece... not 100% on that one.

Perfect 71 grilles are going for around $1000 so it is definately a good buy if not a hot car.

TUFCAT

Its also an air conditioned car which is rare for a /6....as well as the woodgrain steering wheel and optional console for a cheapo.  :shruggy:

71ChallengeHer

Plus the tail lights look in good shape. 71 only.

ACUDANUT

BUY IT. That's a great deal.
I didn't think they had 8 3/4 rear ends in 6 banger cars ??  :scratchchin:  either way, added bonus.
I guess when I was typing, someone else mentioned the 8 3/4 at the same time I was posting. :shruggy:

Charger_Fan

Here's my theory.
Judging by the "diamond tucked" lower doors & kick panels, I'm guessing it's a genuine 6-banger. Some 16 year old got it for $200 back in 1981 with a blown engine or trans. He & his buddies went boneyard shopping (because there was a ton of 'em in boneyards back then) for a drivetrain combo to make it a runner again. 383 or 440...that explains the 8-3/4 rear end.
Then once running, they went back & picked a few good things from other cars to make the car cooler...slapstick, console, maybe a dash that wasn't cracked. There's the VIN tag swap. ;) Then threw some cool wheels on it & flogged it daily. As money allowed, he got the torn seats recovered in this cool black diamond tuck pattern that was all the rage at the time...along with the doors & stuff.
He was gonna paint it sometime soon.

One day, his fuel pump died & he left it parked in a mall parking lot until he got back with a new pump the next day. During the night, someone pushed it around the back of the mall & stripped half the go-fast stuff off the engine & swiped the cool diamond tucked seats.
Completely bummed, the kid either sold the car or parted it out & bought something else. The car sat just like it is for the next 20 years. :'(

Ok, so the mall thing may not have happened just like that. It did actually happen to a friend of mine & his '68 Firechicken, though. :icon_smile_tongue:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

looks like a good deal to me ....   although  wrong rivets in the vin plate  ..look iffy  :scratchchin:

I will need a phone number though.

Haha guys! Read! I have no intention to buy the car. ACUDANUT, you're first on the table. PM me for location, phone number, and name.

As for the car, I had no idea about the VIN tag until you guys noticed it. Definitely interesting, but I don't think it's any kind of fraud. Of course, if ACUDANUT or anyone inquires they can ask the guy, because he's for sure no scam artist. Hell, he probably hasn't even noticed. Either way, it makes more sense to me, especially with all of the mis-matched parts C-stripes pointed out, that the dash is probably out of another car and they simply switched the dashes out and kept the right VIN tag.

I'd really love to see someone here get it! Even if it was $500, I still don't have that so deal or not it's not going to me!

ACUDANUT

Terrible One, I tried to PM you, but for some reason it is telling me that I have reached my max PM.  Funny thing is, I seldom (IF EVER PM).
Maybe you could PM me ?? Thanks,Mike

***Moderators, am I the only one having problems PM anyone ??

That pop rivet looks like every other pop rivet Ive ever seen before and Ive been doing this for many years. Theres nothing wrong with that rivet. If you think otherwise, then you need more experience with cars.
The edges of the rivets in question look round, like a standard rivet. The factory VIN tag rivets are sorta hex shaped...

Here's some repops that Shakey found a while back --->LINKY
