OPEN headers...and working on your car at home ?????

Question:
What do you guys do when you want to "work" on the car,,,and the car is mostly for strip use ??
ie,,,,do have some type of exhaust for the car while at home ??? do you let er rip with open headers ??

The Belvedere has open headers...and i am sure it will be noticed by the neighbors,,,if its running for a length of time in the driveway/garage...

The Charger is fairly loud,,,3",,but full exhaust with tail pipes,,,so i dont mind it running in the driveway,,its not too obnoxious......

What do you guys do that live in a "quiet" neighborhood ??? I want to work on it at home,,but keep it relatively under control....and not get too much attention

Maybe a type of quickie exhaust for the house ???

Mopar440+6

You could possibly get a set of bolt on mufflers that bolt to the header flanges or get a set of bolt on collectors and weld them to a cheap set of mufflers. Just a thought...

Damn R2, I don't have a good answer for you But ,,,,  I love that car... More pics. would do my mind a bunch of good.. More info. all around too.......

Years ago, when I was in High school, we used about a 4" rubber hose that diverted the exhaust out a window blank and straight up the side of the building a few feet past the top. We never used mufflers.. I allways figured that as long as the noise is well above the building it has nothing to bounce sound off from..

NOw, back to that ride of yours.....

just let er rip. It builds character.

actually when the new neighbors moved in next door I ran the car with open headers to "break them in"
haha

Troy

I usually wait to work on the cars until real early in the morning after the college kids next door have a party and are out all night screaming and fighting in their yard. Doc74s car has open headers and a 440 and the metal pole building focuses the sound which makes things entertaining. If I get really bored (or they were especially annoying) I fire up the Suburban (454 dual 2.5" pipes w/Flowmasters) on the other side because it vibrates the windows in the house at idle. Ok, so that's not really "working" on the cars but it's fun and the other neighbors don't mind. The guy 3 houses down on the other side of the street has a stock car (dirt track maybe) and he usually waits until the weekend to work on it. I don't think I'd pull an all-nighter if you actually like the neighbors.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Well let me just say   Dude you lead a charmed life by having the Plymouth in the first place. Looking at the photo's you provided it appears you have plenty of cash and live in a very nice nieghborhood..............

So who gives a F*CK what the nieghbors say when you fire up the open headers!

If it was me I would have a PBR and tune the carb!!!!!!!!!!

There are inserts that you can buy that fit directly into the header collecters, if you look in the Jeg's or Summit catalogs.  They run between 60 and 75 each depending on the muffling effect, or there are bolt on cherry bombs that go by the name "Purple Hornies" if you're really interested, they are cheaper at 35 or 40$.  I am personally thinking about the inserts myself, but have no idea how either of them sound.

When I got my car here one exhaust side was gone in transport. But I must fired that BB to her it, and do small run with one side open. I heard that people were confused around wondering what is going on. Right now car is beside company workshop in industrial zone so if I needed I'll just fired it up, who cares. Anyway car is mostly stripped and without fuel tank so it will wait for a while.

Steve P. - it is good idea with rubber hose, we have some here and I think I will use it.

Hey R2, your combo says Dominator carb and the pic shows a pair of Eddy's.  Which version is the most current?

I would use a set of hearder mufflers. I ran the Runner open one time, cops where here in 10 minutes. Good chances some people are all ready not happy with your car's. No reason to make them bad.

My friends and I have always used the shorty muffler method that slide into the collectors with a big hook on the end of each one.  Pretty easy to slide in but harder to get them back out.  We used the big ole imperiel mufflers

Just run it Doug, but be concsious of the time of day. Try to avoid early morning/late night or mealtimes. Mid morning/mid afternoon/mid evening seems ok to me. I had a neighbour once complain about excessive noise from my car which was being tuned on open headers. I told him it's no different than you firing up your lawnmower at 0700 saturday morning....end of discussion !  :icon_smile_big:

The Eddie heads are on the car........

Thanks for all the ideas on the mufflers........

Install a high flow exhaust system with cut outs before the mufflers, then put electric solenoids on the cut outs so you don't have to crawl under your car to take the caps off.

I'm not sugesting you should buy the items from the people listed in this post.

I don't know if it will work in your neighborhood, but what I did is make sure I talked to all the neighbors...turned out that they all came outside to see and hear the car at first and then it did not cause them a problem.  I am always careful about when I fire her up...pick and choose good times...not to early and not to late.

I even got my neighbors trained well enough now that I drive the car the on the streets and the kids follow on their bikes and the parents wavy as I go by.

It is tough if you are always worrying about the neighbors.  Present that beautiful car to the neighbors and you might be pleasantly surprised that you do not have a problem.

R2, where do you live? Because if that's in California those are 2 million dollar homes... I'm sure the neighbors could afford a decent set of earplugs. Besides, you never know...some old guy might walk over while your tuning and tell you a story about HIS old mopar from when he was a kid and how he'd love to find a good home for it...

Offer them all a quick spin down the street...that should keep them smiling. Sweet ride BTW...love the stance!!

QuoteR2, where do you live? Because if that's in California those are 2 million dollar homes...

I live in Louisville Kentucky,,,,,no million dollar home either  :o.....I used to live in Detroit Michigan until 6 months ago,,,had a 1000 sq ft ranch and a 2 car garage,,,which was fine for me and the family (wife and 3 kids),,,,
I moved to Louisville for a job,,,,,and housing here is CHEAP....you get alot of house compared to other areas,,,,so, no million dollar home for me,,,i wish  ;) ...but we were lucky to find a house with a 2 car detacched garage,,,,so i can keep the car in there....income has gone up a bit,,,but nothing crazy,,,,i have been saving for a long time,,,,and have been putting the money aside for the right car to come along,,,,so i could grab it when it came up for sale.... i was considering selling the charger,,,,to get the 65,,,but didnt want to,,,its a re/se/4 speed,,,,and i have had it a long time,,and its a solid car,,,that i would regret selling...
I like the idea of the high flow exhast w/cut outs....would like to run it open headers at the track,,,,and keep it toned down at the house....

R2 when did you get the little Bel? Nice car. Whats she run?

Just put a full 3" exhaust on it and drive it on the street!!!!!!!!!!LOL

Cool shots 426.... i enclosed some of mine,,,,it shows the dana, caltracs, rancho shocks and fuel pumps,,,,the fuel cell is in the trunk....

You've got plenty of room for a quick/dirty exhaust.  Buy some collectors (3.5"?), corresponding Dynomax Race Bullets (35.99/apiece!), and turndowns, then bolt them right to the headers.  It'll be quiet enough to not terribly disturb your neighbors, and you'll be out less than $100, too.  You could even just attach them with clamps, instead of welding the mufflers and pipe together!

Nick,,,,have you noticed an ET difference ??? (ie open headers vs the dynomax race bulletts...)
Did you run any length of pipe IN FRONT of the mufflers ??
What you mention might be the way to go....I have a set of collectors for the headers already....

Blusmbl

I'll be honest, I haven't gotten any good passes at the track since I installed the "exhaust".  It went 14.2 @ 105 spinning real badly, then the next pass I broke the axle... so I don't have any data for you.  :icon_smile_dead:  However, several people on Moparts have run the Dynomax race bullets (including 440 Jim) and nobody's noticed an ET difference if they're sized properly.  I.E., 3.5" collector, buy the 3.5" mufflers, and you should be fine.

I have Collector extensions on my car (that I got from Ted), and another foot or so of pipe after that... so about 2' into the muffler, then the 22" body bullets, and turndowns... puts it right at the rear axle on a B-body.

If you were to attach them right to the collector, and bought the short case muffler, you should be able to get away without having to use a hanger or anything.  Like I said... nice and simple.  :icon_smile_big:

honestly the cheapest thing you could do is go around and ask your neighbours if they would mind.

I don't have the problem with open headers but I know my neighbors don't like the Charger or my Formula much at all even with full exhaust...  my guess is that they don't like me doing burnouts in the street either but nobody has actually come up to me and complained to my face yet  :icon_smile_big:

I didn't like the neighbor on the other street trying to get his POS ferd pickup to run last year...  that guy couldn't get that thing to run and he didn't bother with the exhaust till he had it halfway driveable.    Thankfully the tune on the motor was so bad it didn't last that long  ;)

Anyway,  do unto others, blah blah blah.   Consider exhaust with cutouts perhaps... like the TTI or accurate  max wedge stuff maybe.    It's your call.
