general lee tire size question

i would like to know wich size of tire in 15 inch i must purchase for my general lee replica ? wich size of tire all guy who made a general lee replica do you use ? i ask this question to people who own a general lee ?

what is the most large tire i can instal on my charger in 15x8.5  ?

A popular choice is 235/60/15's for GL's. However, just about anything is correct.

245/60 fit all the way around and that's the size I like

275/60/15 fit in the rear, with rubbing on the front fenders

295/50/15 is the largest i've seen comfortably fit on the back of a stock '70 body

Man go with what looks good to you, I like the look of 245/60/15s . I know a guy that bought one of the 17 from Warner Brothers. that thing had 3 14" wheels and one 15" wheel.

Mine has 235 60 15 on the front with 15 x 7 rims and 275 60 15 with 15 x 8.5 rims on the back.  No rubbing and they fill out the fenderwells nicely.

I have 235's in front on 15x7's and 295's in the rear on 15x8.5's.  American Racing Vector SE 47's that I bought from the link I sent you on a different thread.

I have 225/60's in front on 15x7's and 255/60's in the rear on 15x8.5's. I have no contact problems, and the car is looooow - just the way I like it!

Being a General Lee has nothing to do with tire size from other Chargers.  On The Colonel (who has Vectors as well) I have 15 x 8.5's in the back, and 15 x 7's in the front.  I run 255/60 on the back wheels, and 245/60 on the front.

any of you have 15x8.5 on the front wheel??? i would like to know if i will have trouble when i will turn with my car if i put 15x8.5 on front of my car

If you use the old 15x8.5 you wont have any problem. the new version 15x8.5s wont fit on the front. Im running 15x8.5s all the way around 235/60 front 255/60 rear

i have order this morning 4 15x8.5 american racing vector wheel and 2 bf goodrich 215/65/r15 for the front and 255/60/r15 for the back...i will receive it in 2 days

If you're talking about the new reproduction AR Vectors, then I hope you're aware that the 15x8.5" size does not clear the front balljoint.  It's fine on the back end of the car, but not for the front wheels.  The 15x7s are the same as the old wheels, but the 15x8.5" new ones are made with more backspacing than the originals of that size.


(Yes, I'm serious.  American Racing made half their repro General Lee wheels not fitting onto the front ends of '69 Chargers.  They actually made a mistake THAT obvious.)

I have to say that I'm a little shocked that there isn't a generally accepted tire size and make for the GL's.

The tire size is all over the map because the wheel size was too. 

(14x7 was by far the most common, especially on the front end.  But 15x7 and 15x8.5 showed up in certain situations.)



The tires sometimes varied for performance reasons too.  The closeup cars ended up with BFG T/As once the cars finally got consistent. 

The stunt crew actually preferred harder-compound economy type tires after a while.  They were easy to break loose on pavement, they didn't puncture easily, and they produced lots of smoke when they spun.
