G'day guys,

just curious.....I have a 71 Charger with a 383 and Air.

My compressor is stuffed and no-one out here has the same type of compressor to replace it with, meaning I'd have to ship one from the states.

How hard is it to adapt a smaller type compressor into the car in place of the large twin rotary looking this i currently have ? Is it common to simply make another fit, and just a matter of spacers etc ?

I have a couple of old compressors off Australia Mopars which work, but I don't know how to make them line up properly.

Any help to this vague sounding question is appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

The aftermarket Sanden compressors are the most popular but just about any rotary compressor with a double pulley can be mounted to replace the original. Below is a page that shows the brackets, if you're good at fabrication you can build your own

The problem with retrofitting these compressors is the need for a way to control the compressor clutch; the factory runs the compressor continuously and controls the system with a valve in the compressor while most others cycle the compressor clutch to control the system. When retroffiting a different compressor you have to add a sensor to the evaporator that cycles the clutch.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Hey 71 Bee Man,

I've been doing some looking around since our last chat and ran a crossed these two sites the first site: mopar muscle magazine shows how to do a rebuild if you plan to do it yourself and the other site is classic auto air. If you plan to rebuild the compressor yourself you might want to contact classic auto air and ask them if they sell a rebuild kit; because so far I have not found anyone else that has any rebuild kits at all.  I did write one company that does sell rebuild kits for the modern compressor asking them if they might have a kit or know if they anyone that might have any rebuild kits for this compressor.  Or you can go the other route which I know is kinda spendy just for shipping, is too just send it classic auto air and have them rebuild it for you; if they do not sell the kit.
