i just put a 360 in my car, and it has a constant tick, the motor sounded fine when i heard it running before putting it in my car, and now there is a constant ticking noise that gets faster as i accelerate. i have headers on the motor and im wondering of that could be what im hearing. i was thinking about getting copper exhaust gaskets to replace the cheap autozone gaskets i got. what would you guys suggest?

mikesbbody

if it is the headers (gasket) it will be pretty loud and will speed up with the car's speed. check that out its a easy fix if that's all it is.

1968_Charger

it is really loud, and does get faster in relation to speed, so im hoping thats alll it is then. ill try some new gaskets.
thanks

hey...i wonder...would it be possible to record it into a wave file, and send it email or post it here somewhow?

Let us know what happens 1968 charger. craigandlynda, there's no mistaking that sound its loud and very annoying! (and embarrassing  :yesnod:) i have had it before.

1968_Charger

i dont have any way of recording it, but ill be putting the copper gaskets on tomarrow so we will see if that solves the problem.

copper gaskets fixed the ticking. i bought some mr. gasket solid copper gaskets they sealed up great!
i just cant seem to get my distributor to seal on the top of the block. it leaks oil down the back of the block when its running.
i put on a new o ring and a new paper gasket between it and the top of the block and it still leaks.
anybody else have this issue?

mikesbbody

great to hear the noise is fixed  :2thumbs: i cant comment on the distributor i have never had that problem (hopefully someone else will chime in)

Are you sure oil isn't leaking out of an intake bolt?

1968_Charger

ill double check, but is sure does look like its leaking from around the distributor.

1968_Charger

well i found the two bolts closest to the area where it was leaking were a little loose. i tightened those, we'll see if that was the problem.
thanks for the ideas!

sure it isn't the oil pressure sending unit?can you actually see the oil come out? if it si coming from distributor, can you see that the distributor sits flat on the block surface? are there any cracks, grooves or nicks in the underside of the distributor base that contacts the block? does it seem to sit too high? wow unusual problem....if it sits too high, has the oil pump drive gear been changed? just some thoughts :Twocents:

ok i finally saw where it was leaking from after cleaning it up real good. at high rpm its coming out of the oil sending unit.  ive tightened it but it is still leaking. would teflon tape seal it or should i use something else?

Steve P.

Are you sure it is leaking around the threads?? Many times the unit is leaking past it's own seal and the only fix is replacement...

On some motors you may need to add a nipple to raise the unit to be able to turn it in tight.

Yes, you can use a little Teflon tape to try to seal it up if it is the threads leaking....

ok, im going to just replace it with a new one, and put some teflon tape on it.  ill let you guys know if that fixes it.  also smoke rolls off that side of the car a full throttle while im driving down the road. im thinking its the oil getting down on the headers. because when im sitting still and rev the engine i dont get any smoke out the exhaust. im praying that is where the smoke is coming from. would there be any other reason it would smoke while driving but not sitting still? and the smoke is definately oil burning.

1968_Charger

ok its all fixed now. i replaced the oil sender and then i noticed where the oil was really coming from. it was squirting out between the intake and block. so i had to pull the intake and put a new  gasket on it. no more leaks!  :icon_smile_big: now im satisfied

Great!!!!!

One more trick in the bag is to clean everything as best you can. Once the block is dry and cool, break out the baby powder and sprinkle it all over the area in question. Fire it up and shut it back down at the first sight of your leak. That will help to define exactly where it's coming from. This helps allot with color also..  I once found a small coolant leak that was mixing with an oil leak. Customer had no idea he was losing coolant. He just thought he had a leak in his overflow tank..
