On a 73 what do I need to add a rear sway bar?

Can I add an original rear sway bar on my 73? I'm sure it didn't come with one originally being that it was a 318 with not even a front sway bar. Now I've got the K-frame with front sway bar and I also want to add a rear sway bar. It's got the 8.75 rear and the iso-clamps. What do I need to get? Or is there a new kit that has everything I need?

Charger1973

Id try and help you with this but I swapped everything under the back of my car for parts from a 72 Rallye, and eliminated the isolators.  I am sure you need one from a 73+ with the isolators though.  Nacho has some good info on this stuff.

WH23G3G

I've already got my new springs and u-bolts all on and tightened. I was looking at the factory illustration and it looks like I need an extra support over the spring isolator. Is it going to be more of a pain adding it than it's worth? Hasn't any company made a sway bar kit that you can add to a non-sway bar equipped car?

WH23G3G

Looks like I just found out for myself. It looks like Addco has a rear sway bar that fits using adapter plates that bolt to the bottom of the spring plate for the end links. So I guess that's what I'll have to try.

hmmmm...............seems odd that you have a 318 73 and it came with an 8 3/4 inch rear....i've seen a lot of 73-74s that were 318 cars, none had that rear...even the 4 speed cars...interesting... :popcrn:

Nacho-RT74

yes I have LOT OF INFO ABOUT and there is lot of threads about if you make a quick search... I'm just arriving home from my USA road trip, so I have to put everything in order first at home... will try to post info later.

being you have a 73, then you have spring isolation clamps, then you need this kind of plates:

or this ( notice the diff is just the elongated holes to U bolts, but works the same):

then mount on this way on to the isolation clamp:

this is the isolation clamp:

and here is how does look mounted on car:

then you would need to use this sway bar( forgett about the red circle, this pic was used for another question reference ):

The red circle show the brackets needes to attach to frame rail... they are two... this is the curved one what keeps the bushing isolation:

What mopar catalog shows:

Notice the sway bar is bended in the middle... that is because the isolation stuff the car rear ride height will be higher, then axle pedestal was shortened to keep same stock ride height tha 71/72s making bar sits closer to axle pumpkin, with a chance to hit if was straight... of course bar is upsided down on pic, the bended goes to down.

I think I still don't have a pic of the bar to 73/74 mounted on a rear view complete assembly... will try to take a pic of mine

and the we have here the NON ISOLATED ASSEMBLY ( used on 72 )

plate:

notice is flat to sit flat over spring:

how does look mounted:

bar ( same on everything except is straight ):

rear view:

frame brackets are the same on both... sway bar rods could it be shorter on bended bar to isolated assembly ( not sure about that )

this pic and info collection has been a team job!!!

the diagram showng the pedestal diff was made by me, just getting conlusions about why the diff between both assemblies, never have measured the height to compare side by side.

Dunno what specifically bracket you mean... plates between springs and axle just used around... the ones to frame rails, maybe some new aftermarket works.

Mr_fixit

Super Nice Pics.
But I believe that the straight bar was also used on 73 &74's too.  I just pulled the straight bar from a 73 rr. and 2 bars with the bends from (2) 75's yesterday. I believe that they changed to the bar with the bend because the straight bar wouldn't fit with the 9 1/4 rear... which came out in 75 on the B bodies......

Back in 79 I pulled  the straight bar from a 74 440 rayllye charger in the junkyard, it's still on my car along with the 8 3/4 rear..
And a friend of mine back in the early 80's had another 74 440 rallye with the straight bar.  Both were 440 auto, with 8 3/4 rears.

The straight bar is # 3643801, the dana 60 bar , not pictured anywhere is 3643501
Don't know the part numbers for the bent bar, but I know there were at least 3 different bar thickneses for later b bodies..( 75 -79)

On 75 cars, if you get the whole bar assembly, with plates that fit between the iso clamp stuff, you can use the whole assembly  on 73 to 74  chargers & satellite/RR's, & coronets.

And the frame brackets  & links will work from 73-79 for 73-74 chargers, too. There is a difference in the  links length between the straight bar and bent bars, but they seem to work ok. In 76 they changed the plates and shock style , so the plates won't work from  newer ones to the 73 & 74's. .

The 73 /74 /75 plates  are prone to cracking.

Nacho-RT74

good added info.

About the sway bar, the one I got was NOS, and the PN did meet with my 74 catalog ( April dated ). Maybe some earliers were straight ? dunno

Will a 73 bracket fit a 71 with no problems??

Nacho-RT74

will need to fill the big center hole... but I think easier than try to fit reversed

then will need to check the U bolts holes aligment between sway bar plate and lower plate. 73/74 are a little bit outer I think.

That a lowering block in there??
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

Nacho-RT74

yes! I installed a lowering block into the isolator assembly. Some tricky due the bushing system but easier than make it over the isolation clamp.
