I found a 72 Rallye Charger with a 400 -2bbl  with buckets console automatic.   B5 with B5 interior with Air Cond. and Power Windows.  Its suppose to be an EXPORT car but Im not seeing any tags on the core support how can I verify that?

My question is how many were made with the 400-2bbl motor in a Rallye Car?

Any response's would be great.   Thanks!

moparsuebear

I think Rallye car production #'s were around 4200 for '72 (Total production was 7,803 for the coupe version and 45,361 fro hard top) I think 400 cars were little less than 1/2 of the rallyes since the 340 bosted higher HP #'s

...400 2 bbl was an option for a rallye...don't know why someone woulf pick it, but there ya' go.
Go Bears!!

I had a guy look at it today and from what he told me, I might.   It sounds like its really solid and comes with a ton of parts.  I might be selling my 340 4speed 72 Rallye charger if I buy this one! :yesnod:

If I can see the fender tag I might be able to guess if Export or not? LEON. :scratchchin:

Kinda curious as to why you would sell a 340 4speed car to get a 400 automatic car?

Id like to know that too  :shruggy:

High Impact

The body on the 400 car is REEEEEEEEEEEEALLY NICE!  :yesnod:   And the 340 car is in need of fenders, doors, quarters, etc. :buff: :buff: :buff:    I know the 340 car is rare but as you guys know finding good parts for 3rd gen cars is pretty tuff. :brickwall:

Who knows........................ maybe the 400 car will be a donar car if I can get it cheap.

IM still waiting for photos,  so nothing to post yet.

nakita7

I do hope you get it cheap, but don't part it out. Rallye cars are too cool and too rare to be parted out unless really needed to. I know Rallye parts are hard to find, can you keep both?

High Impact

Sure,  I can keep both but I only want one.   I know the 340 car is the car to restore,  but like other guys I've got a couple other cars I wanted to finish before doing this one.  At worst I thought if the 400 car may donate some of its parts to fix the 340 car....OR.............If the 400 car was that nice Id maybe sell the 340 to someone that wants to re-do it.   I really like these Rallye cars but its tuff to find the stuff needed to restore one...............esspecially in Northren Michigan!!!!!!!!!!!!

superblu72

Don't think a 400 2bbl was even available in a rallye. Would need to see the fender tag to be certain though.

Someone stated above that it was an option for the Rallye  :shruggy:

If the 400 car is solid rust free you'll save big money restoring it over a Rust Bucket. LEON.

You are close on the total production of 72 rallye chargers, around 4,000. There were 4,000 400, 2bbl charger hardtops built, none where rallyes.

nakita7

The 400 cars were 'Magnums' and all had 4 bbls.

I do agree, as stated above, if the body is better on the 400 car, fix that one and sell the rustier one.

Nope, disagree. Use the 400 body, if it is a 2bbl car and fix the rallye. If he has a 340,4spd cpe there were only 163, if it is a 340, 4spd hdtp prod. #'s were 1364. Definitely more value and a cooler car in the 340,4spd vs. a 400 2bbl. It sounds like he might have found a 400,2bbl,hdtp charger that somebody added rallye doors too.

I say restore the car that is easiest on the pocket book. I used a 69 R/T for parts on my base 69 Charger, It was the cheapest route.

1972Rallye

The Rallye Package (A57) was available on Hardtops and Coupes.  Available engines with A57 were:

318 2bbl.
340 4bbl.  (Rallye only)
400 2bbl.
400 4bbl.
440 4bbl.  (Rallye only - supposedly, but I have seen a non-Rallye 440 Hardtop)

Rallye Hardtop production was approx. 3431
Rallye Coupe production was approx.     461

If you total the total number of 340 & 440 cars (all Rallyes), and subtract those totals from total Rallye production you get:
2149 Hartops remaining
202 Coupes remaining

The 318 2bbl., 400 2bbl., & 400 4bbl. numbers would be split from those remaining...

Clear as mud, but that's as close as you can get.

Finally, code A57 would only be found on the fender tag of St. Louis built cars (vin G).  Lynch Road built cars (vin A) will not have A57 on the tag, only on the Broadcast Sheet.

Thanks to the fine folks at Hamtramck Historical...

High Impact

Ok,  thanks guys.  Heres what going on.   I finally got some pictures but there so big I cant down load them here.   It has a very nice build sheet and I decoded the car from it and everythings right!

Heres the numbers from the fender tag:

05156     176341     803     866

G11     P31

26       G37

C A4    I   V21   C16   H51

GA4   E6B5     GB5   406   E34908

E63    D34   WH23   M2A  177643

The body looks pretty nice and the asking price is $4000.00.   Someone stripped the car and put it in primer and now its starting to surface rust through the primer in places.   The doors look great and so do the front fenders but it does have some rust issues in the rear quarters below the body line.   The interior is gutted and in box'es....................but,  the floor pans look perfect!    Trunk floor has rust on the outer trunk extentions pretty bad.

Im probably going to pass on this car  unless you guys really think it worth getting.     Anybody that wants to see the build sheet let me know and I'll e-mail it to you.   Thanks!

1972Rallye

That's not a B5/B5 car... it's a A4/B5 car...  That's a fairly uncommon combo (Gunmetal Grey / Blue interior).  The car is definately worth saving.

Tough call... out of the ordinary 2 bbl. big block car or cool 340 4speed.  :scratchchin:  :shruggy:

Not sure I'd pass, Sounds like a rare color Combo  :o & YES, From what I can see it looks like a Export car.  :o If you or car in Michigan send to me, I'll restore it for you. :scratchchin: LEON.

High Impact

Yup! me and both cars are right here in Michigan.     I really wanted parts to fix my 340 car but now this car pop's up and turns out to be to good to use for parts  :brickwall:   Now im REALLLLLLLLY CONFUSED :rotz:

konigcharger

nice... definately an Export car

no way thats a parts car

A4+B5=  :icon_smile_cool:

If you have no vision or creative spirit, you can always fall back on the way the factory did it.

I say Restore the rare Silver solid Export car :yesnod: Here's my Business card if you need some help :shruggy: LEON.

Get the car. If you fix the 340 car, you'll spend more money on it than it's worth. Done Rallyes aren't bringing huge dollars yet, but if you plan on keeping your car for awhile, you could be setting yourself up good, by getting and fixing it cheaply now. This 400 car is a fair price, maybe try and get it cheaper. Rare combo. Options.  :scratchchin:

1972Rallye

Another 400 2bble Rallye car just showed up on e-Bay, but this one is a WL21 Coupe!...

e-Bay Item #230274310544

Rough, project type car...  just more proof that the weird/unusual stuff is out there.

I tried to get it cheaper and he's not willing to budge on the price at all.   I told him if he changed his mind to let me know but Im not holding my breath. :popcrn:
