"This weekend, Dodge officially unveiled two Challenger Drag Race Package cars that made their inaugural runs down the 1/4 mile track in front of thousands of race fans at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals near Denver, CO. Based on the standard Challenger SRT8, each of the Drag Race Package cars features a completely stripped body that has the body sealer, sound deadener, and undercoat all removed. Additional components are also left out including the windshield wipers, HVAC system, air bags, rear seats, power steering, exhaust system, side-impact beams, rear bumper beam, and more. Further weight is saved by using composite and poycarbonate components, and overall a total of 1000 pounds has been shaved off the car.

Additional changes include repositioning the engine for a better driveline angle, a slightly shortened wheelbase, a bolt-in crossmember, and solid engine mounts. Engine options include the 6.1L and 5.7L HEMI or the 5.9L Magnum Wedge. Mopar will build at least 100 of the cars to meet NHRA requirement, and they will be eligible to run in Comp, Super Stock, and Stock categories. Pricing will start in the low $30,000 range, and Mopar will begin taking orders in late August or September. Full details can be found in the press release after the jump."

Obviously not street legal without the airbags, exhaust, wipers, but I wonder if they will have VINs. And then so if it has a VIN, I wonder if you could get it licensed...?

Seems odd that they would allow you to order one with either the 5.7 L HEMI or the 6.1L HEMI though. Figured it would be like the Hurst darts and Barracuda's of old that they would only have one engine option. And the price tag of $30K seems a bit off too.

G-man

The more I see them the uglier they look. They never should have tried to bring back a legend. It was available "once upon a time" and it should have stayed that way. Now every Shmow can say "hey i got a challenger" YEAH SURE YOU DO.

Which is any different than any "schmo" saying that he has a Charger, or Superbee, or anything else? Its not like they are even going to make as many of the new challenger as they did from 1970-74.

HKCharger

when will the 09's be in stock at the stealerships?

I know in Canada for a car to be street legal it really only needs headlights, turn signals, windshield wipers, etc

For the Race Chally just add the things it needs, it appears to have headlights and such so add exhaust and wipers and it might be good to go....

I love the black hood one and think they did a great job.  It's odd how the rear tire letters are yellowed?  What are those tires from the 70's?
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Here is a quote from the article.  "Each car will carry an identification plate with sequential serial number"
Not sure if that would pass as a VIN or not.

I think that Estimated $30K Price is pretty sweet for a fresh out the box drag car, the Lowest Est. price for a street Chally less options is Approx. $22K. I know I'd be interested in a b-5 blue one,..
just like this but done up like a T/A with the stripeing.

I'm really gonna check one out to see if it suits my needs in a year or two. My '99 300 M at 75K miles still has lots of life left and right now I'm all about living frugally, something I never did in the past.
Anyhow,.. if you wanted to build a drag car from scratch... I'm sure 30 K might get you an interesting car, but not a new car, I just wonder what the 1/4 mile times are?..   :shruggy:
