My 74 318 2bbl Charger is still hard to start when cold or hot. I replaced the fuel filter and carb. (It does get gas She did start and run) I replaced the rotor and cap with plugs. Checked timing, it was good. Did all that yesterday and today went to start the car and it just turned. Choke appears to be fine also. Could the coil be weak? Timing chain? When she starts the car runs fine. Thanks for any help.

Are you pumping the throttle a couple of times before you crank it?
Also check the color on your plugs. Running too cold of a spark plug will make it hard to start.

Tried pumping and pressing down on the pedal. Plugs are new, but same type as old ones.

In the end, an internal combustion engine needs three things
Fuel, Air, and Fire.... in the long run it needs those at the correct times.

Start easy, check your spark by pulling a plug and wire off, setting it on the block or another ground and cranking the engine, see a spark? If yes then that's out. You've obviously got air unless there is something messing with your throttle bodies.

Fuel is usually the cause, or an incorrect mixture, the easiest way to check and see if that is an issue is stare down the fuel bowls and push the throttle, squirter should dump pure fuel in, if not ,there's no pressure. this could be because the fuel pump is mechanical and the engine needs to be turning, if such is the case an easy way to determine if there is an issue is to pour an ounce or two of fuel straight down the carb, open the throttle a bit and try starting it. You should hear it bump if you have spark.

That should get you started to narrowing it down.

Only other thing I can recommend is changing the coil if you say you have a weak spark.

does it turn slow or really fast ?  Double check your battery ground     :yesnod:

weak spark is a hard thing to detirmine, if you have spark you shuold hea rit try to turn over, unless the timing is way off

Last time I checked the timing it was fine. The starter does sometimes make a grinding static type noise , but sounds normal after it resets. Could a weak or faulty battery cause this? I plan on replacing the starter, coil and ingnition module.

I had this problem for a long time with my Charger and the solution was to put a good battery in it.

The auto parts store kept selling me that weak ass 640 cranking amp battery made for todays cars.
I put a 840 cranking amp battery in her and have never had a problem getting her to start since.

the battery will effect how quickly it turns over, that's for sure, and while the starter is going it will effect whether or not a good spark is delivered.

More important than that is a good coil and control module.
If that truly is the problem, then you should be able to jump it off another car's battery at the same time flawlessly.
