High oil temps... Question.

Hey Guys -

I have recently been noticing that the oil temp in the Charger under normal driving has been up in the 230-240 range. I'm running Mobil 1 15-50 Synth. Usually the temp. hovers around 210 and is pretty constant unless I am really hard on the car, i.e. track days, auto cross, rallies, etc... but now is just starting to happen around town after about 30 mins. of driving. I generally run on the hwy at around 75-80 mph which is about 2900-3000 rpms. Engine temp. is just fine at 170-180, but again, the oil temp. is starting to creep up there. Also, I DO NOT run an oil cooler on this thing, only tranny cooler.

Any ideas... bearings? block? faulty gauge?

Check the guage,  could be a motor issue rearing its head, with the type of driving I wouls suggest some sort of addtional cooling..... not that you drive all that hard..... :nana: :D

first i'd change the oil and filter again...see if the problem goes away cheaply...i know synthetics are not supposed to "break down," but their opearting characteristics might change slightly as the oil picks up more metallic microparticles and chemistry... :Twocents:

I would suggest you take the oil filter, and have someone you "trust" cut it in half and give you an honest opinion on what he sees.  If it has an unusually high amount of shavings then he should be able to tell you whether he thinks the rod bearings are starting to wear.  230º + is getting into red zone, but not crazy.  I would suggest changing oils.  From my experience with racing, sythetics do tend to run a little more temperature. but they can handle it.

How many miles since the last oil change ? Even synthetic lube will break down under hard usage. I would swap in a new filter (Napa Gold) and some fresh 15/50 M1 with a bottle of EOS.  :Twocents:

I agree with Marty here....cut the filter open and see what up ?
